Our trip to the Hepworth Gallery

This week our Year 1s and 2s went on a trip to the Hepworth Gallery. They were respectful, ready and most of all safe, following our school rules down to a t.  Here are some photos from the Year 1’s trip, showcasing their brilliant engagement and artistic skills. Well done Year 1! Have a great rest over the weekend.

Maths- Shapes and patterns.

In maths this week our wonderful Year 1s have been learning about Shapes and patterns. They learnt how to fill in a template of a shape with different shapes, without going out of the template’s lines or overlapping them. The children did really well in this and some even showed off their artistic flair! Well done Year 1.

Anti Bullying Day – Odd socks day.

This week in school our wonderful Year 1s have been learning about bullying. We came in wearing odd socks to symbolise that everyone is unique and that being different doesn’t matter.  The children spent the day learning about what bullying is, how to stop it, how to help others and how to move forward if you are or if you see someone being bullied. This was learnt through the acronym S.T.O.P. This stands for Several Times On Purpose. They also learnt that S.T.O.P isn’t just there for us to identify what bullying is but it also works as a solution: Start Telling Other People. Overall, or Year 1s did an amazing job on this and really impressed us all with their caring and supportive manners.

Money Week – Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about money. The children learnt all about our currency and the coins and the notes we use to buy or pay for things. In this lesson the children learnt about what the difference between pennies and pounds were and the order of each from the lowest value to the highest. Again, the Year 1s did a really good job learning this and they even managed to complete a number of tasks amongst themselves around money.

Money Week! – Woodland Adventure.

This week on our first week back from the half term break, our wonderful Year 1s have taken part in our Money Week in school. They had a really informative online workshop with someone from HSBC! They took us on an online woodland adventure, where we met lots of new animals. As we met them we learnt about all the amazing ways we can save money, how to spend it and the differences between what we want to spend our money on versus what we need to spend our money on. The children did really well with this learning overall but they struggled understanding that we don’t need to buy that new toy they all want.

Visitors – PCSOs

This morning we had some visitors in school. They were our PCSOs. They came in to talk to us about fire safety, how to stay safe at Halloween and how to stay safe during Bonfire night. They taught us some really important and valuable things. Our favourite was the carrot trick. Where the year 1s were taught to stick the handle of the sparkler in the carrot and then use the carrot as a handle to help keep our hands safe and to increase the distance of the flame from our hands.

Living and Learning- Democracy

This week in Living and Learning, we have been learning about how to take part in democratic decisions . This has been perfect timing because our school has held our own JLT elections this week. We took part in an election style vote, where the Year 1s had to put an ‘x’ next to the name they wanted to be JLT and post it in the ballot box. Our winners were crowned today (Thursday 16th), and they  were Zuri and Jesse! Congratulations and well done to everyone who took part and for all of their amazing speeches.

Here is a photo of the behind the scenes, where the children are writing their speeches.

Science – Touch

This week in science we carried on learning about our senses. This time we focused on touch. We worked really hard on identifying the sense and the receptor. We then took part in an experiment where we were blindfolded and touched a number of different objects. In which we then described what we felt, using words such as soft, hard, rough, smooth and rigid. We did really well with this and worked very hard on identifying what we had touched.

Topic – Fieldwork and our geographers.

This week in our Topic lessons we have been learning about fieldwork and then taking part in our very own fieldwork. We learnt that it means going outside the classroom to explore, investigate, and discover things. Our fieldwork investigation was to go around the green outside and count all of the trees in the space. We split into two groups, then went out one group at a time taking part in our investigation. Once both groups had gone we then compared our results to see if we had all counted the same amount.

Maths – Wholes and how they work.

In maths this week we learnt about parts and wholes. Firstly, the children learnt about what a whole is and how we can identify one in individual objects. They then learnt how to make something whole again by splitting objects into parts and putting those parts back together. Following that, we then learnt that whole individual objects can come together to make a whole group of something. For example we need six whole eggs to make a whole box of eggs. The emphasis was on the individual objects coming together to make a whole group. The children explored this by working with different objects creating whole groups of items. Then after this they took part in a  game where they were given a number and a hoop, for example 3 children makes a whole group in the pink hoop and 2 in the green hoop. They worked really well on this and I look forward to seeing them improve their knowledge on parts and wholes.
