National Poem day – Our wonderful poets.

Throughout this week, the children have been learning about poetry. With National Poetry Day coming up on Thursday 2nd October it is only right that we have learning about different poems. The children have been working hard on learning Kitty by Doug MacLeod for their big performance coming up in assembly on Thursday. They have really impressed us with their reading skills and their ability to perform! Here is a look behind the scenes:

Science – Sight and the senses.

This week in science, we have been learning about sight and the senses. The children had to work together to match the sense with the receptor. Then we all worked together on an experiment where the children were split into four teams and they had to throw a bean bag into a bucket. We then counted the scores and tried again with one eye closed. The children then discussed the difference in score, linking back to the importance of sight. We were all really impressed with the children’s teamwork, their findings and most of all their throwing skills! We might have some future basketballers (and scientists) on our hands.

Topic – Geography

In Topic this week, we focused on maps. The children learnt what a map is, the importance of them and how to use them. We looked at a map of the world, then a map of our area and then a map of Moortown Primary to show the different scales of maps. Once we had explored this we started to look at keys in maps. The children were then split into groups to identify different human and physical features on a map. They did really well and even taught the teacher about different places in Moortown!

Science- Parts of the body.

In science this week we have been learning about identifying and then drawing body parts. We worked together first to identify some body parts on a picture of a person. Then we worked individually to draw and label some body parts of our own. These body parts were- the legs, the knees and the teeth.

Reading and writing – Flat Stanley.

This week in Reading and writing we have been reading Flat Stanley by Jeff  Brown. We have been learning lots of new vocabulary such as bulletin board. This is very important because a bulletin board is what made Stanley flat! We have also been trying to make predictions around the text and making inferences from information we have been given.

Topic- Geography

This week in our topic lessons the Year 1s have been learning about the four countries in the UK. They worked really hard on identifying and colouring the four countries and the borders around each one. They’ve had a really good start to the year with a lot of them showing off their geography skills.

Maths – Number formation

This week in maths, the children looked at their number formation again. Building on from the previous week where they looked at identifying and writing numbers up to 20, they worked on identifying and writing numbers to 40, or in some cases even higher. I was really impressed with the work they produced, the support they showed each other and their attitudes towards learning. Well done Year 1! You are all super stars!

Living and Learning: I follow the school rules.

This week in Living and Learning we have been recapping the school rules.

We only have three school rules at Moortown.

  1. We’re respectful.
  2. We’re ready.
  3. We’re safe.

We discussed how we could show we were following the school rules.

In particular this week, we’ve been focussing on being ready by making sure that when an adult says “3, 2, 1 stop” we all have silent voices, empty hands and have eyes on the speaker. The class have been so good at this that they’ve already filled up their Brill Buddy jar. Well done, Y1s!

Welcome Year 1!

Our wonderful Reception children have returned as Year 1s! Not only have they just returned, but they have also taken the school by storm – showing off their amazing skills in following our school rules. On top of that, they have also shown their wonderful characters and welcoming arms, making their new teacher, Mr Volpe, feel at home already!

In maths, they’ve been learning to count out loud and to recognise the written digits for numbers up to 20. They’ve shown a great understanding and made fantastic progress.

In Living and Learning, they’ve also done really well. They’ve been learning about the importance of rules – why we have them and why we follow them here at Moortown Primary.

Well done, Year 1!
