Living and Learning: 8Rs
Since the start of the year, Year 6 have been discussing how the 8 Rs for learning contribute to a positive classroom. To round off this section of Living and Learning, teams of four were tasked with creating and presenting a poster to describe each 8 R and how it helps us learn.
Shapes
This week we have been exploring shape. The children have been playing with shapes and finding different shapes in the classroom and around school.
Why not go on a shape hunt at home and see how many shapes your child can identify?
Maths
Today, Year 3 have been subtracting a 1 digit number from a 3 digit number.
We started by using concrete resources and understanding that we can’t just flip the question around. For instance, 567-9= ? Is not the same as 9-567. Make sure your child is secure on this by questioning them at home.
“Is 568-9 the same as 9-568?”
Have a look at our work below:
Subtracting a 1 digit number from a 3 digit number.
1. Set the calculation out – make sure it’s the correct way around:
2. Starting in the 1s column, do an exchange if you need to. Mark it on the question. I couldn’t do 1-6 so I exchanged one 10 for ten 1s:
4. Finally, answer the question:
481-6=475
Practise at home with your child so they’re secure on this key concept of exchanging to reorganise a number. This will be important when we go on to subtract larger numbers from one another.
Maths
This week in Maths, Year 3 have been adding or subtracting a 1 digit number from a 3 digit number where an exchange is necessary. This seems easy, and many children can do this in their heads, but it’s practise for when we need to use the column methods where multiple exchange are needed for trickier numbers.
Adding a 1 digit number to a 3 digit number with an exchange.
We used resources to build the calculation. We then moved on to formal, written methods.
1. First, set the calculation out:
2. Start by adding the ones column and mark your exchange of ten 1s for one 10. 7+8=15 which is one 10 and five 1s:
3. Add your 10s column, including the 10 you’ve carried over and cross it off:
3. Then, add your 100s column:
4. Finally, answer the question.
267+8= 275
Practise at home with your child to make sure they are secure on this skill.
All kitted out
This year, our Year 5 and 6 football team will be sporting their new colours with pride, after receiving our free Premier League Primary Stars kit.
Stocked full of items including 15 football shirts, shorts and socks, the Premier League kit was awarded to school following our successful application for the Premier League Primary Stars Kit and Equipment Scheme, which is delivered by the Football Foundation. The team colours were chosen democratically by our School Council.
The scheme is part of the Premier League Primary Stars education programme which uses the appeal of Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children at primary schools across England and Wales to learn, be active and develop important life skills.
The new kit will be hugely beneficial for the new Year 5 and 6 football team who are about to start the new season. Good luck to the team.
School Savings Club paying in dates 2019/2020
Did you know we offer a School Savings Club in association with Leeds Credit Union?
The account is open to all children and it is free to set up. As there is not minimum deposit requirement, it is a great way for your child/children to learn the importance of money.
As an extra incentive, Year 3 pupils who open an account, or who currently have an account, will be credited with £10.
We offer paying in sessions every half term where you can bring along any savings to be paid into your child’s account.
The paying in dates for this year are at 3.15-3.45pm on the following dates (the penultimate Monday of each half term).
- 14 October
- 09 December
- 03 February
- 23 March
- 11 May
- 06 July
If you’re unable to attend in person, please hand in any money to be deposited to the office in a sealed envelope addressed to Mrs Tiffany.
To find out more about the accounts or if your child would like to open account, please enquire at the office.
Living and Learning: 8Rs for learning
This week is our final week of 8Rs learning (responsible, risk taking, resilience, resourceful, ready, responsive, remember and reflect) as part of our weekly Living and Learning sessions. Of course, these characteristics are referred to throughout the year across all subjects to promote good learning behaviour. The parent’s guide to the 8Rs can help to reinforce this at home.
After covering all the 8Rs over the past few weeks, Year 2 worked in their groups to discuss which of these characteristics are most important. There were no right or wrong answers and the children were able to talk through their choices with a good understanding and reasoning.
‘You need to be responsible for your own learning because it is your job.’
‘If you are not ready, you can’t learn.’
‘If you don’t remember your learning, you can’t learn more.’
Class assembly
We look forward to welcoming you to our first class assembly tomorrow. The children are looking forward to sharing their learning with you.
Thank you for your support to help to learn their lines at home.
The assembly starts at 2:40pm.
Ordering Numbers
In today’s maths session, the children were ordering numbers to 10 from greatest to smallest using cubes.
Then, the children were asked to demonstrate their understanding of numbers to 10 by choosing three numbers and completing the sentences stems.
Times Tables
0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36
We’ve moved on to the 3 times table this week. In class, we have explored patterns in the three times table:
- It goes odd, even, odd, even
- If you add the digits together (15… 1 + 5 = 6), you always get a multiple of three
- The ones column goes back to 3, 6, 9 once you get to 10 times 3 or 20 times 3 or 30 times 3
- What arrays can we make?
We talk about how we can use facts we know to work out fact we’re less confident with:
I’m unsure about 8 x 3 but I know 5 x 3 and 3 x 3 so I can add them together to get 8 x 3.
Rather than just answering questions or reciting the times table at home, see if you can explore the times table like we have in class.
