Skipping festival Friday 11 May
It’s a busy, active week this week and our next trip out is for the Year 2 skipping festival on Friday.
The classroom will be open from 8:45am to allow extra time for registration as we are leaving school at 9am.
Children should come to school in their indoor PE kit with their uniform in a bag to change into when we return to school.
We are getting back to school during lunchtime so all children need to bring a packed lunch to have when we return to school.
Please also ensure your child has their water bottle in school on Friday and they can bring a fruit snack for the morning too.
If you have any questions, please come and ask.
All Stars Cricket Festival
This afternoon, Year 2 spent a very enjoyable, hot and active afternoon at Old Leos cricket club taking part in the All Stars cricket festival with other Year 2 children.
All the activities involved skills associated with cricket – bowling, batting, aiming at a target, catching and throwing. The children put great effort into each activity.
Tom from All Stars cricket will be visiting school next week to deliver sessions for Year 1 and Year 2 and a whole school assembly where the children will find out the All Stars cricket programme at local clubs.
We even had a star cricketer who impressed the organisers with his skills.
Thank you to parents who helped to transport the children and for the loan of booster seats.
Capacity and volume
Today, we’ve continued our maths learning about measurement looking at capacity and volume. We’ve been investigating, using different measuring jugs, cylinders and containers, different capacities with millilitres (ml) or litres (l) as our units.
Tanvi had spotted this morning that her sun cream bottle had a capacity of 200ml and this afternoon at our cricket festival we estimated how much water we had left in our water bottles (not much in the heat today!). Have a look at the labels on household items to find their capacity. For example, milk bottles, sauce bottles, toothpaste and other liquids.
Taken from the Year 2 age related expectations, here are the related objectives we’ve been learning.
24. choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels
25. compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =
We used a word study to consolidate our learning.
Here are some example questions of how this learning might appear in a KS1 maths reasoning SAT paper.
Also, take a look at Mathletics as new activities have been assigned for the children to follow up this learning at home.

More residential photos
A few more photos taken on our recent visit to Herd Farm.
Residential
What an amazing few days we’ve had!
Year 4 were an absolute pleasure to take on residential. From the children, we saw great teamwork, resilience, (safe) risk-taking, maturity, kindness, good manners, stamina, determination, patience and I could list many more qualities.
All the staff had great fun alongside the children and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience! Great weather too!
Below are the first selection of photos. There are more to follow.
Ask your child to explain what is happening in the pictures.
Green fingered gardeners
We’re giving our outside area a makeover. Today, we planted flowers and herbs.
If you’re missing Y4…
…they’re not missing us! Look at the fun they’re having on residential at Herd Farm. The sun is shining and they are having an amazing time. Some great expressions of concentration but all having a lot of fun.
Cricket
Year 6 had their first cricket lesson this week and they all really enjoyed it. They started off with some simple drills practising their throwing and catching skills before moving very quickly into a big batting and fielding game. We then finished off with some quick cricket which we’ll be playing again next week after some batting and bowling practice.

Leeds Gymnastics Club trial
Leeds Gymnastics Club, who run our gymnastics after-school club, are running an open gymnastics trial at the club, on Sunday 27 May, for any children born in 2012/13. This will be for a place in their development group.
Gymnasts will be selected based on their athleticism, strength and flexibility, but also based on their ability to concentrate, persevere and focus.
