Year 5 Homework

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework links to the English learning we’ve done this week and what we’ll go on to learn for the next few weeks.

To be able to add detail to my writing.

Having learnt all about adding detail to writing in order to keep it interesting and make it descriptive, write the opening to a story using these techniques:

  • expanded noun phrases,
  • prepositional phrases, and
  • adverbs.

Don’t forget, you only use one page for a piece of homework and I only want the opening. We’ll then look at these together in our homework review. While your writing, think about what you’d like to write a full story on as this will be our English learning in the run up to Christmas.

This week’s Talk Time homework links to Anti-bullying Week and the discussions we’ve had in class.

What is bullying and what can I do about it?

Talk to each other about what bullying is; it’s also important to talk about what bullying isn’t so that we can recognise when something is and isn’t bullying. Then, make sure that you know how to deal with bullying if you experience it yourself or see it happening to someone else.

Don’t forget to write a few notes to aid the discussion we’ll then have in class.

This week’s spelling activity focuses on the use of apostrophes for possession (Annas brother) and for contraction/omission (I dont want to).

Each child has been given a sheet to help them practise using apostrophes correctly. Children should complete the activities by Thursday 17 November 2016.

We have two pieces of homework this week, both due on Thursday 17 October 2016.

The first is Creative:

I can show why I love reading.

In Year 5, we always talk about having a ‘love of reading‘. This homework is a celebration of this. We’ve discussed some ideas as a class and here’s what we came up with. You could:

  • interview members of your family about their passion for reading
  • turn your favourite book into a short movie
  • create a trailer for the film version of a book
  • cook a recipe from your favourite recipe book
  • write part of the prequel/sequel to your favourite book
  • create a poster to advertise your favourite book
  • create a fake interview with your favourite author

And, many more…

The second homework is Mathletics:

You have been assigned two activities:

  • Multiply 2 digit numbers, regroup
  • Long Multiplication

We have two pieces of homework this week, both due on Thursday 10 November 2016.

The first is creative:

Why is maths important?

This a broad question and could be interpreted in many ways, hence the fact it’s a creative homework.

Children could:

  • Talk about how adults they know use maths every day
  • Research a key moment in history and explain why maths how maths played a part in this
  • Make a photo collage of examples of maths in everyday life
  • explain why maths is important

The second is using a program called IXL (it’s a bit like Mathletics). Each child knows their login and they should complete the activities relevant to them – the ones on their homework slip.

Some children should complete the following activities (click on the links or visit the website):

Other children should complete these activities:

Please note: a ‘run on’ is another term for a squashed sentence – your children know all about these!

If you have any problems accessing IXL please do not hesitate to ask me early next week.

It’s half-term, so there’s no homework. Enjoy the holiday instead: hunt down a collection of chestnuts on a walk at Roundhay Park, enjoy a cinema trip on a damp day, go further afield and visit somewhere new…

Whatever you do, have a good break.

As usual, we have two homeworks this week.

The first is Creative:

I can show multiply and divide means.

Children should complete the word study (on the sheet) as imaginatively as they can. We’ve done a similar word study in class so they should feel confident. This homework is due on Thursday 20 October.

The second homework is Talk Time:

I can learn my lines (and the lines around mine) for our class assembly.

Children should learn their lines as soon as possible for our class assembly on Wednesday 19 October.

This week’s second homework is Creative and is due on Tuesday 11 October 2016.

To be able to present information about WW2.

Although this week’s homework is Creative, we’re doing it slightly differently. Last year, Year 5 and 6 completed an independent research project. Year 5 would like to have a go at something similar so next week will be a week of independent project work linked to our topic.

Next week, you’ll be creating something independently about one aspect of living on the home front: evacuation, the blitz, air raids, women at war, rationing or anything else that piques your interest. Year 5 always create amazing Creative homework so what you actually choose to create is up to you. Here are a few ideas from me:

  • A magazine for a child living during the war
  • A project board (like we produced last year)
  • An information leaflet.
  • A game we can play

So, decide what you want to create and what it will be about. (You’ll have three hours throughout the week to complete it – think about that when making your choice.) Your actual homework will be to gather the information you need in order to complete the work in class. Do not create your independent project!

So that we can complete this project work during class time, this homework will be due on Tuesday 11 October.

This week’s Mathletics homework should be completed by Thursday 13 October 2016.

Children have been assigned two tasks to complete:

  • Add three 3 digit numbers: regroup
  • 3 digit differences: 1 regrouping

As always, if you experience any problems logging on to Mathletics please come and see me. If the problem can’t be solved, children will be given time on a Wednesday lunchtime to complete the activities.

This week’s second homework is Talk Time.

I can discuss ways to make a fresh start.

Children should discuss the idea of making a fresh start and suggest ways to make one. Children should write notes to remind themselves of the conversation when we discuss this in class. Also, the person they discuss this with at home should sign their homework book.
