Summer Half Term
In line with our Homework Policy, there are no homework tasks or spellings to learn next week because it’s the Summer half-term holiday. Of course, there are plenty of ways to help your child continue learning: get reading, go places, talk lots!

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework is due on Wednesday 25 May.
To be able to use semi-colons in a list.
For many of Year 5, this is a new skill that we’re trying to become more confident with. The children have been given a sentence with a three part list in it. They should expand each part of the list adding description which may need extra commas (particularly if they’re using two adjectives). When re-writing their list with this extra detail, they’ll then need to use semi-colons to separate the parts in the list instead of commas and commas would just make the list confusing.
When I went out for tea, I had starters, mains and desserts.
When I went out for tea, I had delicious, puffy dough balls smothered in garlic butter; sumptuous steak which had been fabulously cooked and had crispy chips on the side; and a mouth-watering, rich chocolate pudding that oozed gooey caramel as you stuck your fork in it – yum!
I want the children to have a go at changing their lists so that they need semi-colons. Think about adding adjectives and using relative pronouns (which, that, when, who), ‘ing words and ‘ed words to add detail after the noun as well as before.

This week’s whole school homework is creative and is due Wednesday 25 May:
I understand rights and responsibilities.
This half term, our SEAL theme has been Rights and Responsibilities. We’ve been learning that if we have rights, we also have responsibilities. Children have been considering the following rights and responsibilities.
- I have the right to learn and I have the responsibility for my own learning.
- I have the right to play and I have the responsibility to play fairly.
- I have the right to express an opinion and I have the responsibility to respect the opinions of others.
- I have the right to be safe and I have the responsibility to make safe choices.
- I have the right to be healthy and I have the responsibility to make healthy choices.
Your child is required to show their understanding of rights and responsibilities in a creative way. Ideas could include:
- a story
- a poem
- a song
- a poster
- a letter
- a comic strip
- a script

This week’s creative homework is due on Wednesday 16 May.
To be able to name and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
Next week’s Maths will be all about shape. In Year 5, we need to be able to identify what 3D shape a net will make; identify and measure angles; and say whether a shape is regular or irregular.
Before we can do any of that, we need to be confident naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. These are the 2D shapes we should be able to identify and describe:
- triangles (equilateral, isosceles, right-angled, scalene)
- quadrilaterals (kite, rhombus, trapezium, parallelogram)
- pentagon
- hexagon
- heptagon
- octagon
- decagon
We should be able to discuss ‘LADS’:
- Lines – how many, equal lengths, parallels?
- Angles – how many, which type, equal opposites, right-angles?
- Diagonals – how many can we spot by joining vertices?
- Symmetry – does it have any lines of symmetry? Where? How many?
We should also know the following 3D shapes:
- sphere
- cuboid
- cube
- prisms (pentagonal, hexagonal etc…)
- cylinder
- pyramid
- tetrahedron

This week’s practice makes perfect homework is due on Wednesday 18 May.
To be able to describe the position of a shape, reflect it and translate it.
These are all of the skills we’ve been learning during Maths this week. We’ve been remembering that we need to go along the x axis then the y axis for co-ordinates and making sure we know the difference between reflection and translation.

This week’s creative homework is due on Wednesday 11 May.
To be able to recommend a film.
We’re in the midst of creating our own animated films in class using stop motion animation. For homework, your child need to choose a film to present to their peers that they would recommend.
Please ensure that any film your child chooses is age appropriate and therefore no higher a certificate than 12A. This is a creative homework so they can present their chosen film in any way they choose:
- make a trailer of the film
- write an enticing film review
- introduce us to the characters
- storyboard what happens
- focus on a director instead and review a number of their films
- focus on an actor and review their best films

This week’s practice makes perfect homework is due on Wednesday 11 May.
To be able to round to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000.
This homework is a recap of a maths skill we’ve learnt every year and just need to keep revisiting to make sure we remain confident with it. Round each number using the table provided. If it can’t be rounded to one of the numbers given, just leave it blank.
Please make sure homework is brought into school on Wednesday. Some children have been forgetting homework and therefore have not been able to check their work when we go through it as a class.

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework is due on Wednesday 4 May.
To be able to answer questions about punctuation and grammar.
The children have got another set of questions to have a go at at home. This proved really useful last week to revise what we’ve already learnt and to find out what we were less sure of.
This is not a test so that children can ask me questions and research things at home. It would be fab if they were then ready to share which questions they were less sure of so we know what to work on together.

This week’s Talk Time homework is due on Friday 6 May (not Wednesday 4 May)
To be able to talk confidently about my chosen person that I’ll write my biography on on Friday 6 May.
All of the children have chosen somebody that they’d like to write a biography on, having learnt all about how to write them in our English lessons. It is their responsibility to find out about this person and be ready to write about them at the end of next week.
Don’t forget to create some notes for you to refer to when you’re writing.

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework is due on Wednesday 27 April.
To be able recognise different word classes.
There are a number of SPAG questions for the children to answer this week all to do with recognising different word classes: noun, verb, adjective, conjunction, preposition, adverb, determiner.
Answer the questions as best you can and we’ll go through them together on Wednesday to see if there are any we’re not sure about.
