Year 5 Homework

It’s the Spring half-term holiday next week…

Posted on Thursday 14 February 2013 by Mr Roundtree

It’s half-term holidays next week, so there are no specific homework tasks, times tables or spellings next week.

Of course, regular practice and learning can still happen: reading each day, swimming, tables practice, trips to the library, walks around Roundhay Park… A personal recommendation from me: take a visit to Leeds Art Gallery -the Liberty and Anarchy exhibition is great!

All will help your child have a happy and healthy holiday!

It’s Christmas…

…so enjoy the break.

We don’t give homework or spellings and tables to learn during holidays.  Instead, we hope you all enjoy the break and spend some fabulously festive family time, whether it’s playing board games, enjoying a book or two or simply relaxing in front of the telly for a treat.

This week’s whole school homework is creative.  It’s due in on Wednesday 28 November.

I can show what bullying means and how to stop it.

As part of the current SEAL theme of Getting On, this week is anti-bullying week.  Within class, the children have been asked to consider bullying including these key points:

  • What is bullying?
  • What are the different types of bullying?
  • What should you do if you are bullied?
  • What should you do if you see someone being bullied?

Useful websites to look at include:

You could produce:

  • art work
  • poetry
  • a poster
  • writing: diary, story, letter
  • a rap
  • a mindmap
  • your own creative idea

Your homework this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday November 28.

I can get show what I know about Victorian…

We’ve had lots of great learning during the Victorian part of our Rich and Poor topic. Next week we’ll move onto new learning and away from the history section of the topic. Children need to produce a piece of work about an aspect of their Victorian learning that they know most about. This could be…

  • schools
  • work
  • clothes
  • homes, or
  • your own idea!

This piece of work could be…

  • drawings
  • writing; diary, recount, story
  • a combination of drawing and writing
  • a picture collage
  • an illustrated list
  • a timeline, or
  • your own idea!

Homework this week is creative.  It’s the first of three homework tasks this year when we invite children to respond to something from a cultural or spiritual perspective (we’re going to time these so they fall close to religious festivals, from Eid to Easter).

I can respond to a book I’ve recently read.

This week, we’d like children to present their responses about a recent book they’ve read. We’re interested to hear your child’s opinions and any connections they might have made between the book and their own life. This book review might include pictures, an interview (you could write a fictional script between an interviewer and a character), a letter (eg to or from a character, or perhaps even the author) – anything which might include your child’s responses!

However, your child might prefer to do the following:

I can show what Eid or Diwali means to me and my community.

Just before the half-term, some children in school will have celebrated the Muslim festival of Eid. Next week, some children in school will celebrate the Sikh and Hindu festival Diwali. We invite those children to respond to the sentence above – they might include a recount (like a diary entry), pictures, an interview (perhaps in a script).

It’s the half-term break…

…so there’s no homework this week.

Please make sure your child continues to read lots and be read to – this is always the most valuable activity you can do at home to help learning.

Why not put some Maths into practice too: play a board game, bake something, create some mathematical art…

It’s time for Talk Time homework this week.

Should everyone be paid the same wage?

This question will generate some interesting discussion and is linked with our Rich and Poor topic.  It also helps the children to address moral issues eg discussing whether it is right that certain professions get paid so much more than others.

We’ll discuss this in school on Wednesday 24 October 2012.

This week’s homework is “Practice Makes Perfect.”

We have been investigating different types of data for the last couple of weeks; this homework looks at a frequency chart and then asks about averages.

Ask your child about mode, median and mean averages.  In this homework they are asked to find the mode, this is the most common piece of data that appears in the chart.

They should be able to complete this homework independently;  if there are any problems then please come and see me.

This homework needs to be handed in by Wednesday 17 October 2012.

Your homework this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 10 October 2012.

I can produce a piece of work for our Rich and Poor display.

Create a piece of work about the rich or poor in Victorian times or any other aspect of history, art or geography.

Your work could be:

  • art work that is rich in detail
  • collage work
  • poetry
  • recounts of the lives of the rich or poor through time
  • …your own idea!

As an exception, work should not go in your child’s homework book. It should be bright, colourful, attractive and ready to put up on display.

This week we are asking you to think about this statement:

I know what makes a healthy brain.

This is creative homework and is due in on Wednesday 03 October 2012.

You could…

  • produce some art work,
  • or poetry,
  • or a poster.
  • or a rap,
  • or your own even more creative idea!
