Our week

This week, as ever, has been a very busy one.

We have started rehearsals for our production in a few weeks. The children are learning their parts well and the songs are coming along nicely, too.

A tennis coach came to deliver a lesson on Thursday and he was very impressed with how the children listened and followed instructions well. An extra well done goes to Isaac and Kai for their tennis skills, great partner work and the support they gave to one another.

World Book Day went well. We had a classroom full of book characters dressed in  fantastic costumes. It was great to see how much thought and effort the children had put into their outfits.

Talking of books, our Friday session of reading for pleasure continues to be a big success. Please remember that children are invited to bring a book from home to add to our library if they wish.

During our SEAL  lesson and homework review, Year 4 were able to suggest some very good ways in which to help a group to work co-operatively. As well as suggesting these ideas, I have seen lots of children demonstrating these within a lesson. An extra special well done to Thomas, Martha, Lewis and Isaiah for doing just that.

As always, please feel free to pop in and see us if you have any concerns or general enquiries regarding your child.

Transport Museum

Today, we enjoyed a trip to The Streetlife Museum of Transport in Hull. Such a variety of old-fashioned transport was on display. We enjoyed looking at Victorian carriages, trams, railways, cars, horses, bicycles, boats and much more. Year 4 also had a science workshop linked to friction and forces. After putting on our white lab coats and a pair of goggles, we were ready for action. The children took part in quite a few experiments, all of which demonstrated forces and friction in action.

Across from the transport museum, there is another place of interest: The East Riding Museum.

This took us on a journey through time, beginning with a life-size mammoth and then continuing on through various time periods.

We learnt some fantastic facts, had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Take a look at some highlights of the trip.IMG_0852imagesIFPTV0V0images19YMBAXLIMG_0853IMG_0859IMG_0856IMG_0860IMG_0862IMG_0865IMG_0867IMG_0876IMG_0877marine-reptilesStreetlife-Museum20180482609_34ebe43667_bimagesEO9I8FJ6515df-img_1957wstreetlife-museum-of

Healthy muffins

During the week, Year 4 have enjoyed a bit of baking. The children used skills such as chopping, grating, mixing, measuring and peeling. To make our muffins healthy lunchbox snacks, we added carrot, apple and cinnamon. Lots of fun was had by all and there were no arguments as to who was doing the washing up!

Viking homework

Year 4 has been invaded!

Following a creative homework, I can research the Vikings, the children have once again shown that they can come up with some fabulous ideas. From life-like longboats to quizzical quizzes, Year 4 have shown they have the lot! We even had a Viking tune played by one of the children. Here are just some of the examples which are on display in the classroom:IMG_0803IMG_0802IMG_0804 IMG_0805IMG_0806IMG_0807IMG_0808

Reading for pleasure

In Year 4 we are promoting reading for pleasure. The children are given the opportunity to bring in books from home for themselves and others to enjoy.

In the classroom we have a wide variety of reading materials for the children to enjoy, such as newspapers, comics, atlases, dictionaries, thesauruses, historical, geographical, scientific, religious and many more.

The calm, relaxing atmosphere during these sessions shows that the children are engaging in reading and enjoying the variety of texts.

Group reading with an adult also happens during this time. Each group read and are questioned by the adult. Target pages are set weekly.

Here are a few snapshots of one of our sessions.IMG_0799Even reading in a Tardis!

27 January 2017

This week, the children have been given three spelling activities. They need to use these to help them to learn the words given last week.

Consonants and Vowels

Write your spellings words; use a blue coloured pencil for consonants and a red coloured pencil for vowels.

Stair steps

Write your spellings as ‘stair steps’.

Alliterative Phrases or Sentences

Choose five of your spelling words and write five alliterative phrases or sentences. An alliteration uses the same initial letter. You may include a word or two that does not begin the same letter. Be sure to underline your spelling words.

Examples: cooling condensationimportant instruction, every emotion explains experiences.

Champion chariots

IMG_0787As we move through the different periods of time in our topic work, this week has seen us pay a visit to the Romans. Roman transport was our focus, especially chariots.

After designing, planning and resourcing, work began on making our very own chariots. Skills included measuring and sawing an axel to the correct size, adding wheels, shaping the front of the chariot and finally attaching it all.

Take a look at us in action.

The finished chariots look great!

Highlights of the week

Well, it’s been a very busy week for Year 4!

Many thanks to all who turned up for our class assembly. The children worked very hard to put this performance together. They were incredibly proud of themselves and each other. We hope the water cycle song hasn’t driven you round the bend too much!

Yet again, Year 4 produced some superb homework showing what they know about solids, liquids and gases. We are constantly amazed by the creative ideas the children come up with. These are on display in the classroom and you are very welcome to pop in and take a look.

Our adventure through time has begun with the arrival of a life size Tardis in the classroom! We’re using this as a reading area and it’s proving very popular with adults and children alike!

During this topic, we will focus on transport through the ages. Working along a timeline, we’ll explore transport inventions, how different people travelled, why people travelled and many other aspects of transportation.

The Stone Age is where we have begun. This week we have studied this period of time and also created our own cave paintings – photos to follow…

For our maths lessons we’re exploring fractions. On Thursday, I gave the children a task to complete that involved some reasoning. The children had to explain and prove their thoughts and ideas. Here are some children at work. Their task was:

  • TRUE OR FALSE?
  • ONE THIRD IS LARGER THAN TWO FIFTHS

This is how they evidenced their ideas.IMG_0740IMG_0741IMG_0739IMG_0742

Mr Owen and I are looking forward to seeing you all again at forthcoming parents’ evenings. Please return your slips and we can allocate you a preferred time slot promptly.

As always, we encourage you to pop in with any concerns or questions you may have.
