Volcanoes

Our topic this half term is ‘Extreme Earth‘. We’re studying how the earth is made up of different layers and tectonic plates. Our focus has been volcanoes and what causes an eruption.

Work has begun on our very own volcanoes using plastic bottles and papier mache. We had lots of fun creating these and are really looking forward to our very own eruptions later in the week.

05 June 2015

This week’s spellings are common words that are often spelt incorrectly. A good way to practice these is to put them into sentences.

1.  because
2.  through
3.  went
4.  with
5.  should
6.  could
7.  would
8.  any
9.  school
10.  people

Who do you think you are?

This week is a themed week in school. On Tuesday, we had a visit from the  Deaf Awareness charity and Kidzaware. We learnt some basic sign language as well as finding out what life is like living with a disability. Ask your child if they can remember the signs for any of the letters of the alphabet.

This morning, we visited St. Gemma’s Hospice and found out all about the amazing work they do, not only in the community, but also for their patients and families too!

Have a look at our week so far.

Don’t forget, Thursday is our class assembly (2.40pm). We look forward to seeing you there.

Pizza making

Today, we’ve been making our own pizzas. We focused on particular skills such as chopping, grating and slicing. The children were able to use methods such as the ‘The Bridge’ and ‘Claw’ effectively. While the pizzas were cooking, the school was filled with an aroma making everyone’s taste buds tingle! I was particularly  impressed with how many offers to wash up there were!

01 May 2015

This week the homework is creative and is due in on Wednesday 06 May.

I can show what I know about magnets and forces.

In class, we’ve been learning about different forces and magnets. This is a chance for your child to show what they know and have learnt over the past couple of weeks.

They could:

  • make a game
  • create a quiz
  • write a poem
  • draw and label different types of magnets
  • create a table to show magnetic and non magnetic materials, or…
  • any other creative idea they might have!

01 May 2015

The spellings this week are linked with our current science topic of magnets and forces. Also, in class, we’re looking closely at root words, prefixes and suffixes. Added to the end of the spelling list is an extra challenge. Using the root word ‘act’ the children need to build a word family. For example, actress, action, acting.

  • repel
  • attract
  • magnet
  • friction
  • force
  • iron
  • copper
  • pole
  • materials
  • gravity
  • Extra challenge, use the root word ‘act’ to create a word family.
