Topic – Geography explorers

This week in our learning the wonderful Year 1s have been learning about the world we live in. Over the last two weeks, they have been learning about oceans and continents, and today they carried it on by learning all about the North and South Pole, the equator and the different hemispheres.

They did really well in this and were even able to identify countries from each hemisphere!

Science: Plants and their parts.

Since returning from their break our wonderful Year 1s have been learning all about plants, their parts and how to grow them. The children started off by looking at different parts of plants and trees. They were split into groups then classified and grouped the different parts together.  They did really well in this and impressed us with their knowledge on the parts that make plants. After this, they then learnt how to plant a sunflower, planting one inside and one outside. They are now going to observe the changes over time (so feel free to ask how ‘Sun Sun’ and ‘Sunset’ are.)

DT, Food and Nutrition – Fruit Salads

This week our wonderful Year 1s have been learning about food and nutrition. They have been making their very own fruit salads! Every one in class had a go at this and they all did a great job, but most importantly they were, respectful, ready and safe for their lesson. The children used and learnt some valuable skills to make their fruit salads. One very important skill the children learnt was the claw method. This is used to help us stay safe while cutting or using a knife. Here are some photos from the lesson:

Well done Year 1! Have a lovely, well deserved, break over easter. I hope you enjoy it as much as you enjoyed your fruit salads.

Science – Seasonal Change

Well done on another great week Year 1!

This week in Year 1 they have been learning about seasons, seasonal change and what kind of things we see in each one. The pupils shared some great ideas on things such as what we wear in each season, what we see and what changes there are. They had a lots of ideas to share, especially about winter (Christmas and Santa of course) but on top of this they also shared some great things about spring. One response that stood out was ‘in spring we see lots of things start to grow. Like grass and the trees.’.

Every one in class really impressed us and even made some great mind maps. Here is one that a table worked on about summer.

Red Nose Day and Comic Relief.

Well done on another amazing week Year 1!

This week has been full of fun, learning and… red noses? This Friday has been Red Nose Day. Here at Moortown we have had a nice day in our Pyjamas, to show our support to the Red Nose day and Comic Relief cause. The children have taken part in a few Red Nose activities, designing their own masks and red noses! They have also been working really hard on their computing skills, working with BeeBots and designing their own games with them.

For those who were not in today, celebrating Eid, we hope you have had a lovely day and that you have enjoyed the celebrations. Eid Mubarak!

Class Assembly – Internet safety and personal information.

Well done Year 1! After another great week, our wonderful Year 1s have performed their class assembly. Our class assembly was on being safe on the internet. The children showcased their learning from Safer Internet Day on stage for this class assembly. After weeks of practise they all came together to give us a great performance. Well done Year 1!

What is internet safety?

Internet safety consists of many different things. To name a few; thinking before clicking and posting, to treat strangers with respect, to be cautious online with others and to never share personal information online. Personal information consists of our full name, our date of birth, our home / school address and our photos online.

Once again Year 1 well done on another great week and I hope you have a great rest over the weekend. (You all deserve it!)

World Book Day – Well done Year 1

Another wonderful day with our Year 1s at Moortown. Today is World Book Day which means we’ve had a day of reading, sharing and creating stories. The Year 1s came in with some amazing costumes: we had princesses, super heroes, ballerinas and we even found Wally!

We started off our day with a really fun and educational workshop from The British Library. The Year 1s learnt all about story telling and how to create them. They looked at retelling The Three Little Pigs by adding their own adjectives and by using prosody. They did so well with this and got to act as the three little pigs and even made Mr Volpe the Big Bad Wolf (which was popular).

Have a look for yourself at some of our great costumes:

Well done Year 1 and happy World Book Day!

Maths: First, Then and Now addition stories.

Our wonderful Year 1s are back and ready to go.

They have had a great first week, settling straight back into the swing of things.  Over the week they have learnt about computing, maths and have even started a new story called Nothing by Mick Inkpen.

Although, they have learnt so much this week, one lesson in particular stood out, and that was maths.  In our maths lessons this week the Year 1s have been learning about First, Then and Now stories, so we took them outside to practise and show their own addition stories. We had some great stories with some really imaginative ideas. Look below to see a photo of one of the Year 1s stories.

Living and Learning – Safer Internet Day.

On Tuesday of this week we had our Safer internet day, Year 1 learnt about four main areas of online safety (plus lots of other online safety tips too).

  • I know that there are sometimes age restrictions online.
  • I know that passwords are important.
  • I know that some things online may not be true.
  • I know that I shouldn’t share personal information online.

We also welcomed Dave from d:side last week to support this learning last week.

We’ve had lots of discussions about staying safe online. We read the book Chicken Clicking by Tony Ross. In the story a chick gets access to the farmer’s computer and makes a chick friend online. He goes to meet his new friend in the woods… I’ll let your children tell you what happens next.

The children shared some great ideas giving Chicken Clicking some superb advice about how he should have acted differently.

Finally, well done for another great half term Year 1! Have a lovely break.

Topic: A trip to Abbey House Museum.

As another week comes towards its end, our wonderful Year 1s have had another great one. Today our Year 1s and 2s went on a school trip to Abbey House Museum. This was to carry on their learning and deepen their understanding around their History topic; Toys. They took part in a workshop where they looked at different toys from the past and the present to see the differences between them and how they have changed over time.

They also got to take a step back in time and walk along the cobbled streets of Abbey House Museum to gain an understanding of what life looked like back in the late 1800s. Some of them even had the opportunity to experience what life was like in a prison cell in the late 19th century!

Well done on another great school trip Year 1!
