Lighthouse Art
As part of our seeing mini-topic, today Year 3 followed a set of instructions to sketch a lighthouse. They then decided how they would collage it using different materials. The children used watercolours to create a sea and sky background. Have a look at their wonderful masterpieces!
The art was displayed in the hall so that the children could review each others work.
Amazing Algorithms
We’ve been writing algorithms to control Bee-Bots this morning in a Computing lesson.
“We were drawing different shapes using bee-bots.”
“We had to make 80p by making the bee-bot stop on the correct coins.”
“We’ve been controlling bee-bots by making algorithms so that they move.”
“I used a counter to check my algorithm was correct.”
Pedestrian safety
This morning, we’ve been learning about how to stay safe as pedestrians or passengers in cars.
Whenever we are crossing a road, we need to think, stop, look and listen.
Yellow Yorkshire
Thank you for supporting our Yellow Yorkshire day to raise money for one of school charities, Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Our final total raised was £202.31 so thank you for all your donations.
We also had a visit from a representative from Yorkshire Air Ambulance to hear how the money we raise is spent by the charity.
Swimming awards
Year 3 have made great progress with their swimming this year at Scott Hall Leisure Centre and, following their final assessments, the children will be receiving their awards shortly.
Well done to all the children who have developed more water confidence, water safety skills and many have improved their strokes.
A new Swim England report has recently been published showing the health and wellbeing benefits of swimming.
The report shows the unique benefits of water make it the ideal place for people of all ages to exercise. It is particularly beneficial for those with long term health conditions.
The report also found evidence that swimmers live longer. Swimming regularly also helps older people to stay fit, physically and mentally.
On the other end of the scale, the report also found that children who take part in swimming lessons regularly develop physical, cognitive and social skills quicker than those who do not.
We hope Year 3 continue to learn this valuable life skill.
Transition to Y6
The Year 5s found out that they have the pleasure of me teaching them again next year – all of them were delighted of course!
We had a great afternoon discussing what skills we’d need in order to be successful in Year 6 and did lots of mini activities to test out those skills.
We tried out our listening skills while I read out some drawing instructions and the children tried following them. We discussed that we might makes mistakes in our learning because we aren’t listening. However, it is possible to listen carefully and not understand so we thought about what we needed to do if that was the case at some point next year.
Next, we tested our ability to work hard and be resilient. Building a tower out of cards was extremely frustrating and we linked it falling down to times when we don’t understand or get something wrong. Most of us proved to be very resilient.
There’ll also be lots of situations that will require us to work in a group or pair. So, we tested our ability to work as a team by creating some human tables; if one person doesn’t pull their weight, the table will fall which could also be the case if we’re trying to solve a maths problem together in class.

We also need to communicate when we work with others and the 5-legged challenge tested this.
What a great afternoon that will turn into a great year in September.

If your child would like to open account, please ask at the office.
Maths in cookery
We have been busy in Year 4 learning about mass. The children have demonstrated their knowledge in knowing about grams and kilograms well. We estimated the mass of certain objects and were able to convert measures.
Following this, we put these skills to use in some cookery.
Year 4 were able to accurately weigh and measure the ingredients to make a chickpea and mushroom curry.
Also, it was great to see other methods of chopping and slicing being used safely.
The aroma around school had everyone’s tastebuds tingling.
Children’s Day 2017
