Year 2 Homework

04 November 2016

Posted on Saturday 05 November 2016 by Mr Wilks

The homework this week is practice makes perfect and is due in on Thursday 10 November.

I can show what I have learned about the 2 times table.

In maths lessons this half-term, we’re learning about multiplication and division. We’ll be looking at the 2, 5 and 10 times table. This week, we’ve focussed on the two times table. Children should complete the worksheet in the book.

They could also do something creative to show their understanding of the two times table.

Finally, remember that Mathletics is a good way for children to practise their maths at home.

It’s half-term, so there’s no homework. Enjoy the holiday instead: hunt down a collection of chestnuts on a walk at Roundhay Park, enjoy a cinema trip on a damp day, go further afield and visit somewhere new…

Whatever you do, have a good break.

The homework this week is creative and is due in on Thursday 20 October.

I can create a piece of art which reflects a feeling or mood.

This could be a painting, sketch, sculpture, collage, e-art, tapestry (?). However, you should try to convey a feeling or mood in your art. We’ll then look at them as a class and see if our feelings when looking at the art match your intentions.

There is also a spelling task to complete this week in the homework books.

The homework this week is talk time and is due in on Thursday 13 October.

What is the value of art?
Art is valuable in lots of different ways. It can cheer us up if we’re feeling sad. It can entertain us or help us to see things in different ways.

Yet, art also has a monetary value. Some art is worth millions of pounds. Is this right? Is it easy to see which art is more valuable?

What art is valuable to you and to your family? Why is it valuable?

The homework this week is Talk Time and will be discussed on Thursday 06 October.

I understand how someone else feels.

For this homework, children should discuss this statement with others at home.

They should consider:

  • What are the different emotions someone might feel?  How many can you name?  When/why might someone feel that way?
  • How would you know how someone else is feeling?  What does their face look like?  What does their body look like?
  • What could you do if you see someone showing certain emotions?  For example, loneliness, anger, confusion or worry.

In our SEAL lesson this week, we considered how someone else might feel through the book, Beegu.

Children should be prepared to share their ideas.

The homework this week is creative and is due in on Thursday  29 September.

I love reading!

For this homework children should show off their love of reading. This could be stories, comics, fact books, poems.

Here are a few ideas for what the children could do:

  •  write a review of their favourite book
  • create a poster celebrating their favourite book or author
  • write a letter to a character in or the author of their favourite book
  • interview a character or an author
  • re-write a favourite part of a book
  • write an alternative ending or new chapter for a favourite book

The homework this week is creative and is due in on Thursday 22 September.

Where in the world?

We’ve been learning about the world in our topic lessons for the past two weeks. We’ve used atlases, maps and globes to locate and name the different countries in the United Kingdom and the different continents and oceans of the world.

In this homework, you can reflect on this learning and create something which shows it off. Alternatively, you could teach the rest of the class about a place in the world which is special to you. It could be a place really far away or really close.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Thursday 15 September:

I can make someone feel welcome.

This week, we have started to think about our new SEAL theme, ‘New Beginnings’. Our SEAL statement next week is I can make someone feel welcome and we would like the children to think about how they might do this.

capture

Speak with your child to see what they could do or say to welcome someone, maybe with reference to our three new children in class. This will also help children to develop empathy skills to consider how others may feel in certain situations.  As well as the school setting, you might also want to consider other examples such as other groups like brownies, sports clubs, at parties and even visitors to your house.

In our SEAL session next week, we shall be considering this statement through discussion and also drama.

Please see below for talk time guidance in our homework policy:

Talk Time homework: this involves a discussion topic eg ‘Should animals be kept in zoos?’ Children should make notes (even pictures, diagrams etc) ready to participate in a class / group discussion on the topic. Please make sure you write a comment about the Talk Time discussions in the homework books.

Top Tips:

  • Turn the telly off!
  • Sit around the dining table!
  • Have a chat and share opinions and ideas!
  • Children should talk with family, friends and each other.

Have a happy and healthy holiday

It’s the summer holidays at last, so there are no homework or spelling activities. Enjoy the holidays instead!

Does your child spend less time outdoors than prison inmates? A survey suggests three-quarters of children do, as the time spent playing in parks, woods and fields has shrunk dramatically due to lack of green spaces, digital technology and parents’ fears.

Research shows that playing outdoors promotes social skills, improves vision, reduces stress, increases attention span and provides vitamin D.

This week’s whole school homework involves completing the pupil health questionnaire sent home with your child/children.

I can share my views about health.

This annual questionnaire helps us to find out pupil views on some of our key health issues at school. Please support your child to complete the health questionnaire by discussing these issues.

The questionnaire should be returned to your class teacher by Wednesday 20 July.
