Hello Year 2s!
It’s Mr Wilks here. I’m going to be taking over the home learning from Mrs Taylor and Mrs Freeman as they’re in school a lot more now. I’ve recorded a short message to say hello.
My email address is paulwilks@spherefederation.org
Please email to ask any questions, let me know any problems or to let me know how your child is getting on with their learning.
Okay, on to the home learning for today…..
Click here for the maths video. And here’s the worksheet: Y2 – Monday – Arithmetic addition
Half-term Home Learning
Because this week is half-term, we’re taking a break from the usual daily home learning tasks (just like we did at Easter). Instead, we’ve prepared a menu of home learning activities that you might want to dip into this week – these are optional only, but you might want to encourage your child to have a go at being a quiz master, doing some up-cycling, presenting a cookery masterclass or any of the other activities.
Whatever you decide to do, we hope you have a happy and healthy half-term.

Symbols of happiness
The Sunflowers is one of the most popular paintings in the National Gallery and it was the picture that Van Gogh was most proud of.
Why sunflowers?
Sunflowers had a special significance for Van Gogh. He made seven versions of them.
Yellow, for him, was a symbol of happiness.
Can you create your own sunflower picture? You can choose what to use to create it.
Here are a few ideas and a tutorial.

Task 3
Science
LO: I know which parts of a plant we can eat.
Complete this task.
You can choose to cut and stick the pictures or draw your own.
Extra activity
Art
Observational drawing is drawing what you see and we have done this activity in class before.
It can be a flower, a person, a still life, a landscape, whatever. But it’s drawing what you see in front of you as realistically and as true to life as possible.
Observational drawing is a great exercise in seeing.
When we look at something with the intent of drawing it, we tend to look more carefully than usual. We see, truly see, the shapes, the patterns, the colors and the shadows.
Choose a piece of fruit or a vegetable to sketch. Look closely at the shape and patterns.
Here are a few ideas.

19 May: Home learning
Hope you completed the activities from yesterday’s home learning ok and you are ready for what we have in store for today. Let’s make a start.
Task 1 Reading
LO: I can respond to a text.
Today, we are going to finish our How to NOT go to school text from last week.
1.Listen to Chapter 4. Click here and complete the questions about the text.
2.Listen to Chapter 5/6 to finish the story.
Here are the characters of the story which you could cut out to retell the story or simply colour them.
Great work – time for an active break from imoves.
Task 2 Maths
LO: I can follow a route around a map.
We are going to complete our position and direction learning with a lesson taken from Oak National Academy. When completing this lesson, click on next activity in the bottom right hand corner to move through the learning.

1.Firstly have a look at this document to show what physical and human features might be.
2.Using these examples, sort them into physical and human features.
3.Can you think of any other physical and human features you could add?
Hope you have stayed motivated to complete your learning for today. We’ll be back tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the day.
18 May: Home learning
Hello Year 2 and hope you are all well and you enjoyed your break over the weekend. It was lovely to speak to lots of families last week and please keep up all the great work you are doing at home.
If there is anything we can help with at this time, please send us an email (carolinetaylor@spherefederation.org and jackiefreeman@spherefederation.org) and we will try to help.
Alongside, or instead of, the home learning posted here, don’t forget the websites for home learning document to provide additional learning opportunities.
Are you set for a week of home learning before a well earned week off? Here we go!
Task 1 Reading
1.Click here to hear the fluency text for this week, What plants need to grow.
2.Read the fluency text yourself.
3. Underline/write out any words you are unsure of and find out their meaning.
Challenge: Can you use a synonym (a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase) for the words you are unsure of and swap them into the text? For example, you could change ‘tries’ to ‘attempts’.
Task 2 Spelling
The spellings this week can all have the suffix -ful or –less added to them (some can have both). The underlined words have an extra rule to follow when adding the suffix: drop the y for an i.
To make each spelling you need to add the suffix to the root word. For example, delight (root word) + ful (suffix) = delightful and use + less = useless.
1.Watch this video, What are suffixes? The suffix less means without, eg penniless means without pennies and the suffix ful means full of eg beautiful means full of beauty.
2.Write out your spellings (including the suffixes) using your neatest handwriting.
3.Choose one of the activities below to help you learn these new spellings.
- Paint some of your words with paint (on paper) or water (outside).
- Put your words in a box of some kind. Play music and pass the box. When the music stops pull out a word and read it. The other person must spell it. Get points for a correct spelling.
- Cut out letters from a newspaper or magazine to make some of your spelling words.
- Or choose any activity from our spelling guide.
4.Finally, get moving with this Super Movers video about prefixes and suffixes.
Task 3 Maths
1.Complete this BBC Bitesize lesson all about bonds to 100.
This learning is based on multiples of 10 eg 90+10=100 so a challenge, if needed, would be to add any two numbers to equal 100 eg 41+59=100.
2.Test out your knowledge by playing Hit the Button (select Number Bonds and play one of the games highlighted below).
Good work today, Year 2. You could have a go at this puzzle, from the childrens’ newspaper First News, to finish your learning for today. You can access the current First News paper here.
15 May 2020: Home learning
You have all been very busy this week and produced some super home learning. Don’t forget to keep checking the class news page.
We have a few things to get through today and I’ve given you a ‘Freedom Friday session.’ I will explain this a bit later on.
Task 1
Spellings
Listen to my sentences and write down the correct homophone.
There are 5 sentences but remember you only need to write the word not the whole sentence. Pause the recording after each one.
Times tables
We have been learning our tables throughout the year.
Listen to the recorded times tables test. Try to answer each question.
Task 2
LO: To be able to correctly use exclamation marks in sentences.
Complete this activity.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zmtpscw
Task 3
Freedom Friday
Today, you can choose one (or more if you wish) of the activities below.
- The Great Race
She turned in the saddle and looked behind her. Emma could see the others gaining on her. Digging in her heels, she wispered some words of encouragement in the ostrich’s ear as it burst into full speed. They were making good time but there was still a lot further to go…….
Can you continue the story? Who is chasing Emma? Is this a race or some sort of an adventure?
2. Junk modelling – why not upcycle some waste materials in order to make something new? What can you find to make a model with? Be as creative as you like! Don’t forget to send a picture of your model to us.
Here are a few ideas.
3. Challenge your teacher
We have had one quiz already from lots of you. I enjoyed trying to work out who was who in the baby photos. Some of you haven’t changed at all!
Can you think of another way to challenge us? You are now the teacher and you need to set us some home learning!
Below is a challenge for you.
There are 10 pennies in the shape of a triangle. Can you turn the triangle upside down? YOU CAN ONLY MOVE 3 OF THE COINS!
Great learning this week everyone!
Enjoy the weekend and stay safe!
How to NOT go to school
Here are the links to each chapter for this weeks’ book, How to NOT go to school.
We hope you’ve enjoyed listening to the story and the activities too.
