For all children in Year 1 – Year 6, the homework this week is talk time and is due in on Wednesday 10 February.

It’s time for children to consider if they would like to stand for election for our new School Council. With two representatives from each class, chosen democratically by their peers, all children at Moortown Primary are encouraged to take an active part in pupil voice.
Elections for our new school council will take place next Thursday 11 February with our polling station and ballot boxes at the ready. Candidates will have the opportunity to give their election speech to their class on Wednesday 10 February.
What makes a good school councillor has been considered by our current school council.
- ‘Communicating with others – pupils and adults.’
- ‘Having good listening skills to know what to contribute in meetings.’
- ‘Thinking of realistic ideas to suggest in meetings.’
- ‘Considering other people’s views even if you don’t agree with them.’
Hints for your speech include:
- What skills and abilities would a good school councillor have?
- What are you particularly good at that would help you to be a great school councillor?
- What do you think would make the school better? What could you do that people would really like?
- Think of things that are realistic, maybe that you could do yourself, rather than having to ask other people to do?
Thank you to our current school councillors for all their ideas and contributions over the last year. We hope you have enjoyed this role and responsibility and you are welcome to stand again for election.

If you choose not to stand in the election then you should consider the importance of voting.

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework focusses on common spelling and punctuation errors.
To write spellings into a sentence.
Common mistakes from our English books are:
- incorrect use of their, there and they’re
- mixing where and wear
- incorrect use of the apostrophe for were and we’re
Along with this, we’d benefit from learning more about how to use its and it’s correctly and generally become more confident using apostrophes correctly.
The homework highlights these errors and provides a way of practising them.
This homework is due on Wednesday 10 February.

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework focuses on fractions work and is due on Wednesday 03 February.
To be able to work with fractions.
There is a booklet inside homework books this week that requires the children to practise the many skills required to confidently work with fractions. All of these skills have been used in our Maths lessons this week and will be used again next week. There is an explanation or example for each skill to help the children to work independently.

This week’s Creative homework is due on Wednesday 03 February.
To be able to show what I know about life in the ocean.
Our Life topic will focus on life in the oceans next week as this is where all life began. Think about what you know already about the world’s ocean and the life it holds today, or has held in the past, and present this creatively.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Information poster
- Draw and label diagrams
- Present the different types of animals you find in the ocean
- Create a quiz
- Create a ‘lift the flaps’ info page

For our Practice Makes Perfect homework this week, we’re working on skills we’ve been developing in Maths.
To be able to find missing lengths and work out perimeter and area.
The children need to use the information they already have to work out the size of the missing lengths. They can then use this information to work out perimeter and area.
This homework is due on Wednesday 27 January.

This week’s Talk Time homework is linked to our Life topic and is due on Wednesday 27 January.
Debate: Choose an animal and prepare to argue that it is the ‘best’ animal.
You’ll need to think about the positive points about that animal and have evidence to back it up. Don’t forget to consider what negatives it might have so that you can counter argue any negative points brought up by any other debater.

What is Life?
Our new topic will be ‘Life’:
- How do we know about ‘Life’ in the past?
- How have species changed over time?
- What different types of animals are there?
- How do animals change throughout their life?
- What keeps humans alive?
Explore what you think ‘life’ is. Are there any things that you would argue aren’t experiencing ‘life’ as you understand it? Think about how you can present your views in a creative way.
You could prepare a presentation, create an image, write a story outlining what ‘Life’ is… Enjoy!

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework is due on Wednesday 13 January.
I have been assigned three Mathletics tasks.
The children need to log on to Mathletics where they will find that they’ve been assigned three tasks.
- multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
- dividing by 10, 100 and 1000
- adding capacity
These tasks must be completed by Wednesday and if there are any problems with accessing Mathletics, I need to be told before so that they can be given time in school.
