If you go down to the woods today…….

This week, in English, we have been thinking of different ways to ignite and inspire our writing. What better way than go down to the woods!

The children loved doing their lesson in a different setting. They were encouraged to think of strong adjectives and use their senses to describe the setting. During our visit, some superb vocabulary was used. Words and phrases such as:

  • vivid, purple flowers
  • blankets of dead, crunchy leaves
  • ancient, tall trees, sweet aromas drifting through my nostrils
  • silky, soft feathers in the palm of my hand
  • and many more.

Back in the classroom, the children set to work on their very own settings. They thought carefully about their designs and selected resources accordingly. Again, using the five senses to help, the children studied the materials on offer and looked closely at the textures.

The imaginative ideas flying around the room were an absolute delight to hear. Children worked well as teams, were so very helpful to each other, and were totally engaged in the whole lesson.

  • “This is the best way to help me with my writing.”
  • “You just wouldn’t think that we were doing English.”
  • “I’m really looking forward to doing my writing about my setting.”

Rewarding Residential

Last week, Year 4 enjoyed a residential trip at Herd Farm.

It was fabulous to see all the children so enthusiastic about all aspects of our stay. For a lot of the children, this was the first time being away from home without parents. All staff were impressed with how well everyone supported, cared for and encouraged each other.

Some of the activities really took our breath away – and our legs!

Lots of children pushed themselves into taking a safe risk and attempting things they’ve never done before. Being responsible, remembering, being resilient and showing resourcefulness were also demonstrated by all – especially with bed making!

Mrs Burke, Miss Hale and I were incredibly proud of the all the children. It was an absolute pleasure to take them away for a few days – albeit with very little sleep. Here are some photos of our adventures…

Have a great holiday!

Just a quick note to say have a great holiday. All the children have worked very hard indeed and deserve a good rest. However, keep adding in a bit of learning here and there to keep them fresh for when they return to school.

Many thanks to everyone who came to see our recent production. The show was a big success and we were so very proud of each and every child. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

Enjoy the break and we will see you back at school in two weeks (and one day).

24 March 2017

This week’s homework is Talk Time.

I see things from other people’s point of view.

Children should talk about how it is important to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and understand how they feel in order to help them resolve their issues. We will have a class discussion on Thursday 30 March.

We are still concentrating on our 11 times table.

Also, we will be revisiting previous tables regularly.

24 March 2017

This week’s spellings have been taken from a recent test done in class.

They are:

  • height
  • decreasing
  • popular
  • tomatoes
  • destination
  • vision
  • material
  • musician
  • nature
  • information

Below are some ideas to help you. Choose two activities and complete them in your homework books.

  • Use a computer to write each word in a different font.
  • Put your  words into alphabetical order.
  • Write a story about an ogre using all of your words at least once.
  • Draw a picture for each word. Turn one of them into an artwork.

Residential information evening

A quick reminder that on Thursday 23 March at 6pm there will be an information evening for the families of those children attending the residential in April. This is a good opportunity to find out more about the venue, the activities, the necessary items to bring and of course to ask any questions you may have.

Look forward to seeing you at 6pm on Thursday.

The meeting will be held in the Year 4 classroom.

Topic celebration

To celebrate our topic learning, Time Travel: Transport Through The Ages, we invited parents, carers and families into our classrooms. The children showcased their learning well and were willing, and able, to answer questions about it in great detail.

Adults and children were free to wander into both classrooms to view all the learning. A few of the examples on display were; chariots, hot air balloons, Viking ships, Titanic information, cave paintings, futuristic transport sorting activities, big topic book and much more.

Well done to all the children and thank you to all those who came in to share this with us.IMG_1286IMG_1289IMG_1293IMG_1294 IMG_1287IMG_1297IMG_1305IMG_1285IMG_1306IMG_1303IMG_1302IMG_1300

17 March 2017

This week’s homework is creative and is due in on Thursday 23 March.

To design a quiz to show what I’ve learnt about our topic.

To celebrate bringing our current topic to an end, I have asked the children to design a quiz. They will need to think about a period of time throughout history and create questions about it. It is important that some of these questions are transport related as this has been our focus throughout.  We discussed in class how to present a quiz and how to vary the answers. For example, multiple choice, use pictures, lift the flap and so on.

During our homework review session, the children will be able to try out their quizzes on their friends.
