SATs Week!

After much preparation, Y6 completed their SATs tests this week. They have all worked extremely hard and should all be proud of themselves.

As a reward, we enjoyed an afternoon at Moortown park and ate some ice-creams as well!

Well done Y6 – have a great weekend!

Red Cross: Asylum Seekers

On Friday morning, we had a visitor from the Red Cross visit Year 6 to help us learn about refugees and asylum seekers.

We discussed empathy and the experience of asylum seekers, thinking about how we would respond if we were forced to flee our country. We read a story about a 13-year-old Syrian refugee and used key words from the story to create a poem.

Here is a poem written by one of our Year 6s:

School is free
Healthcare is free
Loving family
Everything changed
Uncle died
Have to move
Have to prove my identity
Been abused
Been robbed
Need to rotate
To reunite with my family

Help at home: ask your child what a refugee is and one thing they would do differently after today’s workshop.

Living and Learning: I know the importance of sleep

In this week’s L&L session, we learnt about the importance of sleep.

It’s recommended that at 10 years of age, you get 10 hours of sleep per night to reap the following benefits:

1. Concentration – increased concentration on tasks throughout the day

2. Health – you’ll feel fuller thus making it easier to maintain a healthy weight

3. Decision making – more decisive decision making

4. Memory – short term memory is transferred into long term memory

5. Mood – a better mood and less irritable

6. Repair – body’s muscles, organs and tissues are repaired during sleep

Well done, Gurvar, who received this week’s L&L certificate!

Help at home: establish a clear, structured nighttime routine with your child to ensure they get the recommended amount of sleep each night. This will help their social, mental, emotional and physical health!

Dissecting Alstroemerias

In this week’s science learning, we expanded our understanding of the anatomy and reproductive cycle of a plant.

We did this by dissecting alstroemerias and labelling the different parts.

After this, we created a cartoon comic strip to illustrate how alstroemerias (and similar plants) reproduce.

Help at Home: See if your child can remember the different parts of a plant. Even better if: they could draw a labelled diagram to illustrate their understanding!

Making Pizza!

Recently, Y6 spent the morning in groups making pizza!

We followed a recipe and created our own pizzas from scratch!

Firstly, we made the dough and kneaded it into shape.

Then, we made our tomato sauce for our base.

After that, we prepared our toppings before placing them onto our tomato base.

Once we’d cooked our pizzas, it was time to enjoy!

Well done, Y6!

Living and Learning: Safer Internet

Recently, we enjoyed a day looking at how to be safe online.

Safer Internet Day

One of our sessions involved a visitor!

We enjoyed learning some statistics about being safe online before deciding if some online accounts were real or fake. We learnt not to trust every piece of information we see online: online accounts on social media sites or gaming sites might not always be as they seem!

Think before you post: We also learnt that once we share something online, a picture or post for example, it’s out there for good no matter if you delete it. If you post a picture but change your mind, someone could have easily saved it and passed it on in that time!

Help at home by talking to your child regularly about the pros and cons of being online and monitoring their online usage!

Model of our Solar System

In a recent Science lesson, we learnt about the different planets in our Solar System.

We learnt about the heliocentric model of the Solar System by which all the plants revolve around the Sun that is in the centre.

We learnt that different planets are different distances away from the Sun.

In order for us to fully grasp this concept, we scaled down the actual distances between the planets and represented their relative distances in the playground!

We found out that Mercury is the nearest planet to the Sun and Neptune is the furthest away!

Help at home by seeing if your child can remember the order of the planets from the Sun. We made a mnemonic in class to help us!
