Welcome Back!

Hi everyone!

Welcome back! We’ve had a happy and healthy start to life in Y6 and Mrs Russell and I are proud of how everybody has coped not yet being in the classroom.

Here’s some important info about this year:

  • P.E. days are Mondays and Fridays (come to school in your P.E. kit on these days)
  • Please come to school in the correct P.E. kit and correct uniform on non P.E. days – see our policy here if you’re unsure!
  • Homework – every Friday your child will come home with a ‘Talk Time’ homework. This will be reviewed the following Friday.
  • Spelling – every Friday your child will come home with a list of spellings from that week’s learning. These will be tested the following Friday.
  • Reading – every Friday your child will come home with an activity to complete in their reading records. Sign underneath and leave a comment or question about your child’s reading! These will be reviewed in our Book Club session the following Friday. Reading every day is super important! This could be a book, magazine, recipe book, a synopsis on the TV guide… anything! Top tip: put the subtitles on while watching TV!
  • Times Tables – every Friday your child will come home with a times tables target. Practise in short (but often) chunks of about 10-15 minutes per day! This could be on TTRS or your own method! These will be tested every Friday. Be prepared for related facts, too! E.g. if 4×6=24 then 40×6=240. Some weeks, we’ll have a TTRS battle against other classes so look out for these!

If you’ve any questions, comments or concerns, then please find me for a chat after school!

Keep up with the hard work Y6!

15 July 2022

This week, we’d like you to practise spelling words with the ‘u’ phoneme that is made by the ‘ou’ grapheme.

Here are your words:

trouble

couple

southern

country

young

rough

double

touch

These will be tested at the end of next week.

Good luck!

Living and Learning: RSE

This half term, we’ve been enjoying our RSE Living and Learning sessions.

RSE is relationships and sex education.

Each week, we have a different L&L statement. During our RSE learning, these were all about relationships and being a good friend. Our sessions included learning about:

  • the names of male, female and baby animals such as a bull, cow and calf
  • the biological differences between male and female humans
  • the names of body parts that males and females have

The children in Y3 had lots of relevant, thoughtful questions during our learning and were able to show maturity, too! Well done, Y3!

Roundhay Park Visit

Hi everyone!

The weather forecast for the day of our trip is that it’s going to be hot.

Your child will need to bring:
– sun cream (apply this before school and bring it with you)
– a hat
– a water bottle
– a packed lunch and a snack
– come to school in P.E. kit (shorts and a t shirt)
– comfortable shoes

Any questions, please ask.

Thanks!

Mr Wain

01 July 2022

In our upcoming spelling lessons, we’ll be practising adding ‘cian, sion, ssion and tion’ to words. Have a practise at home to help you with your learning. The words you’ll be tested on are:

attention, fraction, mission, direction, confusion, politician, optician, percussion

Can you spot or think of a rule which helps you remember each ending? We’ll be exploring this in class.

Good luck!

24 June 2022

This week, we have been learning how the ‘gue’ trigraph (three letters making one sound) can make the ‘g’ phoneme (sound). We also looked at how the ‘que’ trigraph can make the ‘ck’ sound.

Practice your spellings for next week’s test:

antique

unique

cheque

picturesque

catalogue

tongue

league

fatigue

Parallel and Perpendicular!

In today’s maths lesson, our learning objective was:

What are parallel and perpendicular lines?

We learnt that…

parallel = lines that are opposite, equal distance apart and will never meet

perpendicular = lines that are at a right angle to each other

Part of our learning involved finding parallel and perpendicular lines in the playground.

Here’s what we found:

Can your child identify all the parallel and perpendicular lines in the photos above? Can they find any at home?

PE days this half term

Hi everyone,

Sadly, our gymnastic sessions on a Monday afternoon came to an end last half term.

Therefore, this half term, our PE days will be Wednesday and Thursday.

We will be swimming on a Wednesday, like usual. On Thursdays, we will be practising a range of different events in preparation for Sports Day!

Thanks!

Mr Wain
