End of year reflections

It has been a real pleasure teaching all the children this year. Mr Owen and I are extremely proud of each and every child. Throughout the year, confidence has grown, mature attitudes have developed, risk-taking (both in the classroom and on residential) have improved and there are many others I could add to this list.

We hope that all the children have enjoyed their time in Year 4 and we wish them well as they continue on with their learning journey.

Many thanks for all the support from parents and for all the very kind gifts.

Below is a poem to reflect upon our year.

Reflections Year 4

There once was a class – Year 4

Who were anything but a bore

When the bell rang

Oh, the teachers they sang

And rush to open the door.

In Isaac a risk he takes

And learns by the mistake he makes

Next to him Nicky sits

Working hard to bits

He’s ready to learn when he wakes.

Poor Ripley he’s had a few bumps

Some of which have caused large lumps

Manpreet sure can chat

She needs to shorten that

But boy that girl can jump.

Dear Josh is next in line

Like the sun he always shines

Lewis it’s true

You work your way through

With handwriting that’s really quite fine.

In Filip an artist we found

With knowledge to totally astound

Theo drama’s your thing

We’ve heard you sing

Rockafella – such a great sound.

Oh Dylan what can we say

We’re more proud of you every day

Creation’s her thing

And she loves to sing

Pia’s homework has blown us away.

Hardworking and focused she is

Sachpreet has become quite a whizz

It’s plain to see

Ethan’s just lovely

And there’s nothing he likes more than a quiz.

Gymnastics and dancing at pace

All with a smile on Maja’s face

Albert be sure

We’ve seen you mature

A friend like you is just ace.

We know that sport is your thing

And Farai competition you bring

A head full of facts

Inside they’re all packed

And Thomas just loved to sing.

Isaiah it’s been a great year

Your reading has made us all cheer

She came out of her shell

And boy it went well

Humairah you conquered your fears.

So lucky to have taught you Kai

Make sure you aim for the sky

A challenge he faces

And through it he races

You’ve beaten us Alex no lie.

Martha we’ve been quite impressed

Your work is always your best

In Amrit we see

A professional to be

Such talent and so smartly dressed.

Norpreet not sure where to start

Your kindness and such a big heart

Maths he has nailed

And art was unveiled

Ishaan we’re glad to have been a big part.

Lori a good friend too all

Even better with a ball

Next door is Danny

Who’s really quite canny

If you need help then he’s who you call.

A delight in person is Grace

How we’ll miss that smiling face

Ben what’ll I do

My helper who knew

To put wires in the right place.

Be happy to move to Year 5

We know you’ll continue to thrive

It’s sad but true

The year is through

For your best you should always strive.

A smile, a tear we’ve shared

Be sure about you we cared

Good luck everyone

It will be fun

And PLEASE don’t swing on your chairs!

Maths in cookery

We have been busy in Year 4 learning about mass. The children have demonstrated their knowledge in knowing about grams and kilograms well. We estimated the mass of certain objects and were able to convert measures.

Following this, we put these skills to use in some cookery.

Year 4 were able to accurately weigh and measure the ingredients to make a chickpea and mushroom curry.

Also, it was great to see other methods of chopping and slicing being used safely.

The aroma around school had everyone’s tastebuds tingling.

Next Friday, 14 June, we will have our final spelling test of the year. Words will be chosen at random from the statutory word list for Year 4.

Each child has been given another copy of this word list to use for practice. All the words have been covered throughout the year. Test your child by picking words at random, asking them to spell them and highlight any they are struggling with for more practice.

The children will be tested on 25 of these words.

Good learning!

Edible homework?

This week, as is often the case, Year 4 produced some superb homework. The children certainly got their thinking caps on and came up with unique, explosive, detailed and edible ideas!

The theme was ‘Extreme Earth’.

Very well done to Pia who came up with the idea of baking buns and using icing. She created volcano, tsunami and earthquake buns – too good to eat!

Dylan and Albert both caused a big eruption!

Take a look at the photos on show.

Another well done to Isaac who made his very own Top Trump cards.

Sharing reading

On Friday afternoon, Year 4 spent some time sharing reading with Reception class. It was lovely to see how well the older children interacted with the younger ones and vice versa. Getting enjoyment through reading is something that we want to promote and all the children seemed to be getting a lot of pleasure through this activity.

What a super way to spend half an hour on a sunny Friday afternoon.

This week’s homework is creative:

I can show what I’ve learnt during our Extreme Earth topic.

In class, we have had a discussion about some ideas for this homework. We came up with a few ideas.

  • a working model
  • a quiz
  • a piece of art using different materials
  • design your own Top Trumps
  • a story
  • slideshow or presentation
  • get creative!

WARNING – NO VOLCANIC EXPLOSIONS WITHOUT ADULT HELP!

Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings.

Lots of children in class are still getting confused with these in their writing. Learn to spell the words below, write down the meaning of each word and then put each word into a sentence.

  • there  their  they’re
  • male  mail
  • bored  board
  • through  threw
  • knew  new
  • waist  waste
  • weather  whether
  • serial  cereal
  • aloud  allowed
  • piece  peace
  • check  cheque
  • cent  sent  scent

Half term highlights

Yet another half term has passed and what a busy one it has been!

Year 4 has been full of learning with lots of fun along the way. Here are some of the highlights from the past few weeks.

In English, we have been planning and writing our own descriptive settings. The standard of writing has greatly improved across the class. Children who have previously found writing quite a challenge were inspired and motivated by the creative way in which we prepared our work.

  • “Gazing through the gaps in the leafless trees, shafts of sunlight hurt my eyes.”
  • “As I stumbled along the narrow, rocky path, a tiny, yellow bird fluttered past me.”
  • “Raging like a lion, water cascaded down the battered rocks and into the deep, blue pond below.”

Our new topic, ‘Natural Disasters’, is proving to be a popular one. The children have so far learnt about the Earth’s layers, volcanoes and the impact they can have on an environment. Our recent trip to Magna was a big success and full of fascinating facts. We even got to see a ‘fire tornado’! Some children have managed to carry their descriptive writing in topic lessons: “Boiling, hot lava charged down the rocky sides of the volcano like soldiers running into battle.”

Safety Week was jam-packed with activities and visitors: Dogs Trust, E-Safety workshop, safety awareness in various settings and bike safety to name but a few. There are a few photos below.

Here are some recent quotes from the children:

  • “I love our ‘Reading For Pleasure’ sessions. They are so calm and we can just enjoy reading.”
  • “I love school. It’s great fun with all the teachers.”
  • “Playtime is great because lots of people play with me.”
  • “My favourite subject is Art. I like being creative. Also, I like our SEAL sessions as they are calm and you can share your emotions.”
  • “I like writing and you can get some really good ideas from other people.”

Below are a selection of photos from the last half term. Take a look.

Enjoy the half term break and we look forward to seeing you all for the final term of Year 4!

19 May 2017

Due to there being quite a few tests in class this week, we have decided to keep the same spellings as last week. Children need to learn these ready for a test on Friday 25 May.

In the front of homework books, there is a spelling guidance sheet. This gives examples of different strategies to aid learning spellings. Children have been told to use ideas from this to help.

Dictation is another great way to help with spelling and punctuation.
