‘Scoot the Route’ 26 – 30 September

Scoot to school next week for the chance to win vouchers in our prize draw.

Next week, we’ll be supporting Leeds City Council’s ‘Scoot the Route’ initiative to promote scooting to school to help reduce congestion at the school gates and encourage pupils to lead more healthy active lifestyles.

We will be running a competition throughout the week whereby children will be issued a ticket (below) at the gate if they come to school on their scooter.  They need to complete the ticket and hand it in to the office.  All tickets will then go in to a draw on Friday 30 September where children have the chance of winning one of five £10 Love2Shop vouchers.

Don’t forget you can park your scooter near the bike storage area using one of our new scooter storage pods.

It’s Gold again!

Physical activity participation rates have increased again for 2015/2016.

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.  Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the mark based on participation in competitions, extra-curricular sporting activities, sports leadership and local club links.

Once again, we’re proud to receive a Gold award!

Thank you to all pupils, parents and staff who continue to have such enthusiasm for participation.

Class dojo

You may have heard this mentioned at home since your child has started in Year 2.  Class dojo is our new class reward system which is proving very popular.  Children are awarded dojo points in class for positive behaviour and learning.  Later in the year, we will be linking the rewards more specifically to learning behaviours.

Well done to Phoebe who is the first to reach our target of ten class dojo points.

Autumn term school meals menu

Don’t forget our Autumn term menu is available to view on our website and is displayed on our dining room window. The menu, from our school meals provider Catering Leeds, follows a three week cycle. Have a look for the week ahead to make your child aware of what the daily meals are.

School meals continue to be free for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. If your child is in Key Stage 2, please check for eligibility for free school meals.

If your child would like to start having school dinners, please inform the office. A combination of packed lunches and school dinners is also available.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Thursday 15 September:

I can make someone feel welcome.

This week, we have started to think about our new SEAL theme, ‘New Beginnings’. Our SEAL statement next week is I can make someone feel welcome and we would like the children to think about how they might do this.

Speak with your child to see what they could do or say to welcome someone, maybe with reference to our three new children in class. This will also help children to develop empathy skills to consider how others may feel in certain situations.  As well as the school setting, you might also want to consider other examples such as other groups like brownies, sports clubs, at parties and even visitors to your house.

In our SEAL session next week, we shall be considering this statement through discussion and also drama.

Talk Time homework: this involves a discussion topic eg ‘Should animals be kept in zoos?’ Children should make notes (even pictures, diagrams etc) ready to participate in a class / group discussion on the topic. Please make sure you write a comment about the Talk Time discussions in the homework books.

Top Tips:

  • Turn the telly off!
  • Sit around the dining table!
  • Have a chat and share opinions and ideas!
  • Children should talk with family, friends and each other.

Sport England Primary Spaces award

There have been some changes to our outside space over the holidays.

You may have noticed some playground changes since we have returned to school.  If not, ask your child to take you to the back playground and this is what you’ll see.

The installation of the MUGA (multi use games area), nets in the main playground and playground markings outside Year 5 are as a result of a successful application to Sport England under the Primary Spaces fund to help primary schools who have little outside space.  We were awarded £30,000 to create a multi-sport area and our School Council were part of the decision-makers for the final designs.

The new facilities will provide vital facilities for curriculum PE and physical activity across the school day including playtime, lunchtime and after school.  They have proved to be a hit in the first week back with children eager to use the new facilities and also watch (in a safe manner).

Thank you to Playscheme, the contractor responsible for the installation.

School Saving Club

There is currently an added incentive to open a School Saving Club account with Leeds Credit Union.

All children in Year 3, who have an account, will be credited with £10 from Leeds City Council.

If you are interested in your child opening an account, please contact the office.  We have half termly after-school paying in dates where children can pay in money into their accounts.

Welcome back!

Year 2 had a great first day, settling into their new routines and getting to know all about their new class. There was a lot to take in!

We also welcomed three new children to the class and hope they settle in at Moortown Primary.

Part of our initial SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) learning was to consider what makes a happy, fair and safe classroom.

From this, the children created our class charter.

New SEAL theme – New Beginnings

As we start a new school year, I can greet someone politely is our first SEAL statement of the New Beginnings theme.

As we start the new school year, our SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) theme focuses on New Beginnings.

We begin the theme with a manners SEAL statement, I can greet someone politely.

New Beginnings allows children the opportunity to discuss and reflect on how they or others may feel in a new situation or setting. This SEAL theme offers children the opportunity to see themselves as valued individuals within a community, and to contribute to shaping a welcoming, safe and fair learning community for all.

During the theme, the key areas of learning are empathy, self-awareness, social skills and motivation.

Through discrete SEAL lessons, circle times and across the curriculum, children will explore feelings of happiness and excitement, sadness, anxiety and fearfulness, while learning (and putting into practice) shared models for calming down and problem-solving.

New Beginnings supports the development of a learning community in each classroom where all members feel that they belong. Class contracts, produced at the start of the year, allow children to contribute to how they feel they can achieve a safe and fair learning community.
