As part of our big topic, Heroes, Year 1 took part in a hero-themed yoga session. After thinking about what is a hero, what makes a hero and who are heroes we became superheroes by using our bodies to do a variety of yoga postures.
New sporting activities at lunchtime, led by some of our older pupils, will be starting from next week.
Recently four Year 5 children took part in Bronze Ambassador sports leaders training at Roundhay School. After the training, feedback was really positive.
‘I really enjoyed the day and it was a great opportunity to learn how to become a leader… I am going to try to become more confident and get people at school to join in with more sport and other activities.’
These children are now part of a wider group who, alongside Mr Catherall, will be leading sports activity sessions twice a week at lunchtime. They will be joined by students from Leeds Metropolitan University who will also be delivering physical activity sessions at lunchtime.
Our local sports partnership with Roundhay School has recently been set up and is one of the ways we are investing our PE and sport government funding.
For all children in Year 1 – Year 6, the homework this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 05 February.
I know what makes a good school councillor.
It’s time for children to consider if they would like to stand for election for our new school council. With two representatives from each class, chosen democratically by their peers, all children at Moortown Primary are encouraged to take an active part in pupil voice.
Elections for our new school council will take place next Friday 07 February with our polling station and ballot boxes at the ready. Candidates will have the opportunity to give their election speech to their class on Wednesday 05 February or Thursday 06 February.
What makes a good school councillor has been considered by our current school council and in each class this week. Suggestions have included:
We invite children to respond to the sentence above in a creative way – they might choose to use this time to prepare an election speech or otherwise consider this statement and present it as a character description, pictures, an interview with a current school councillor or other ideas of your own. For either option you should include the importance of voting.
Hints for your speech include:
Thank you to our current school councillors for all their ideas and contributions over the last year. We hope you have enjoyed this role and responsibility and you are welcome to stand again for election.
Good luck to all children who decide to stand in the elections. Results will be announced in our assembly on Friday 07 February.
There are a few places left for KS2 children on two upcoming ‘come and try’ sporting events hosted by Roundhay School.
As part of a local sporting partnership, Roundhay School are organising two free ‘come and try’ sports sessions that your child (KS2) is invited to attend. Please note that no member of staff from Moortown Primary will be attending these sessions. It will be the responsibility of parents to take and collect their child to and from Roundhay School at the specified times. You’re welcome to stay and watch.

Please note that places on these two sessions are limited so please register your interest as soon as possible with the school office.
Year 1 have been very active in their first week back with our new PE lessons for this half term. In the first of our two weekly PE lessons, we are working with Mr Lynch, a local dance teacher, to develop our movement and dance skills. By the end of the first lesson there were some great partner performances showing a range of actions.
Our second weekly PE lesson is with Mr Catherall, one of our teaching assistants and also a qualified sports coach, who is developing our skills needed for invasion games such as basketball, rugby, football and others. Ask your child how they use their sticky pads!
PE is usually Monday and Tuesday so please ensure your child has their PE kit at school, to get the most out of these lessons.

Physical activity after-school clubs will be FREE in the Spring term. This is one of the ways we are spending Government funding given to all schools for PE and school sport.
You may have noticed on the latest menu of after-school clubs, for the Spring term, that our physical activity clubs are FREE! This is one of the ways we are spending Government funding given to all schools for PE and school sport, encouraging children to take part in a range of physical activities. In order to maximise the long term impact for our school, both pupils and staff, we are looking at the most sustainable ways to invest the funding. Further details of some of the projects we are involved in will shortly be posted on the website.
In the meantime, if you have any feedback about our after-school clubs please speak to Mrs O’Malley.
