11 September 2020

The homework this week is Practice Makes Perfect and should be completed by Thursday 17 September.

I can learn a rhyme by heart.

As we begin our learning in Year 1 with the whole school topic of After the Fall, we’d like the children to learn the nursery rhyme associated with the book, Humpty Dumpty. We’d love to see some videos of the children reading/singing the rhyme (carolinetaylor@spherefederation.org and jackiefreeman@spherefederation.org).

The children can listen to the rhyme here.

On Friday, the children will be bringing home their homework book. Please do have a look inside this book as there is some useful information including our homework guide.

Taken from the Autumn for All document, here’s some information about how homework is a bit different at the start of this year.

We’re setting weekly homework as we normally do. The key difference here is that Homework Books should stay at home for the time being.
Just as normal, the tasks are posted on the website. Instead of the task pasted into books, children take home a piece of paper with the task on, too. The tasks are a variety of Talk Time, Practice Makes Perfect and Creative, but especially the first two.
Parents can email a picture or update about a completed task (just as many have been doing with the home learning tasks we set in Spring and Summer terms). The homework will be reviewed in school, so some pictures would be good!

We will miss you, Year 2

Hello Year 2 and your families

What a year and what a class! We are so disappointed that we’ve not been able to finish this year back together. You have been such a great class and we will miss every single one of you.

You have proved to us, while you have been at home, what resilient and responsible learners you are so a big well done to you and your families for coping at home for so long. We have been so proud to see your efforts with your learning at home.

We’ve so many happy memories from teaching you all this year even though it was cut short. Why not have a look back at our class news page to reflect on and remember all the wonderful learning and experiences we have had.

We would like to share a couple of farewell messages to you all.

Goodbye from Mrs Freeman

Goodbye from Mrs Taylor

Finally, all the Year 2 staff would like to thank the children and their families for the very generous gifts we have received. They are very much appreciated.

We hope you all have a happy and healthy summer and we look forward to seeing you all back in school in September.

Week 14: 14.07.20: Home learning

Hello Year 2 children and their families. It is my last home learning post for you all today so I wanted to say thank you to your adults for all your support as you have taken over our role for the last fourteen weeks! We have missed the class very much and we are sorry the year has come to an end before we could all be back at school together.

We hope you have a safe and relaxing summer holiday and we shall see you all when you return to school as the new Year 3 class.  We know Mr Wain will have a great year with such a fantastic class.

So, here we go with the learning for you for today.

Lesson 1 science/reading

Do you remember back in February, we started our grow your own potatoes project.

Well, they have been well cared for at home and the time has come to harvest the potatoes.

1.Read this text to see how the potatoes were harvested.

2.Watch this video to show how the potato farmer harvests their potatoes and gets them ready for the supermarket.

3.Read and complete this quiz based on the video. Here are the answers.

Lesson 2 maths

First of all, spend 10/15 minutes on Times Table Rock Stars.

Today, try a suduku challenge to test your problem solving and reasoning skills.  Start by completing the 4×4 grid. Then, try the 6×6 grid.

Lesson 3 PE

This skipping activity is led by someone the children will recognise. Unfortunately, our Year 2 Skipping School Festival couldn’t take place this term but click here to watch the video and join in if you have a skipping rope at home.

If you don’t have access to a skipping rope at home, choose five of the ThisisPE challenges.

Hello to our new class

Hello Reception class and your families – we hope you are all well.

It has been a very strange end to the school year. Usually the children would have visited their new classroom and staff and we would have shared with them what would happen in September as they change year group. This year, sadly, this has not been possible.

Please don’t worry. All the adults in Year 1 are very excited for September, to meet you all in person, and to welcome you to your new class. We will work hard to help you settle and get you back on track with your learning.

Mrs Weekes has recently sent some information about your transition to Year 1 and as we can’t see you all in school at the moment, here are some messages for you from your new teachers.

Mrs Taylor

Mrs Freeman

Mrs Roth

A message from Mrs Bharath…

Hello, Reception class. I am excited to work with you again in Year 1. I hope you are all keeping busy and that you enjoy the summer holidays. See you, raring to go, in September!

We all hope you and your families have a happy and healthy summer holiday. Stay safe and well. See you in September!

Week 14: 13.07.20: home learning

Wow – week 14! You have reached the final week of home learning and a huge well done to all children and their families for trying so hard at home to keep learning. You have been amazing!

You can see what your class mates have been up to on our latest class news post. Please do keep in touch (carolinetaylor@spherefederation.org and jackiefreeman@spherefederation.org).

If you responded about the Zoom call, this will take place tomorrow and you should have now received the invitation details. If you responded but haven’t heard from us or you would like your child to join, please contact us today if possible. Thank you.

Lesson 1 Year 2 class quiz

Thank you to all the children who have sent through a fact about themselves. Here is the chance to test out your knowledge (or best guesses!) with our Year 2 fact quiz. Read the facts and try to match them to the correct class mate or adult. Click here for the quiz and click here for the answers.

Lesson 2 virtual school trip

Sadly, we have all missed out on school trips this year. Despite this, it is still possible to virtually visit different places all over the world without leaving your home. So, today you are going on a virtual school trip!

1.Choose from one of the following places to visit.

Natural History Museum

International Space Station

Houses of Parliament

Great Wall of China

Hull Streetlife Museum of Transport

Barcelona FC Camp Nou stadium tour

Taj Mahal

Melbourne Zoo, Australia

2.Explore your chosen place as if you were visiting on a school trip.

3.Complete this sheet to tell us all about your trip.

Lesson 3 maths

Start your maths learning with this Super Movers video.

As we had our virtual sports day last week, here is a maths sports day challenge which covers a range of the maths learning from Year 2. Click here for the learning.

Latest update

As we come towards the end of the school year, we are so impressed to still receive messages with great learning and other experiences you are having while being at home.

This week, we’ve heard a great story from one of our class mates who, during lockdown, has been selling old toys and books on a stall to raise money for the NHS, their football club and Hope Pastures Donkey Sanctuary. They raised an amazing total of £135! They even had the opportunity to meet some of the donkeys as a thank you for supporting the charity. Fantastic effort!

We’ve also been hearing about visiting the sporting hero’s scarecrow hunt in Boston Spa, lots more yummy fruit kebabs, making home made lemonade, virtual sports day (including the gymnastics challenge), creating some Warli Art (a very famous form of art in India), achieving best young football player at their football team awards and of course, some fantastic home learning.

Also, well done to Rufus, Evan, Kian and Tommy who have achieved their next level on Lexia. Great work!

Can you find the treasure?

This week, in our Year 3/4 bubble, we’ve been part of Captain One Eye’s crew and after we read our instruction text about how to make a treasure map, we decided to have a go ourselves. The children followed the instructions to create their own versions including their directions to the treasure. Next, it was time to make our own treasure boxes and consider what treasure is important to us in our lives.

Virtual sports day results and skipping challenges

Well done to all children who took part, at home and at school, in the virtual sports day yesterday.

The results are in and can be accessed here.

Here’s our overall school results for each challenge (out of 217 schools).

Netball challenge 56th

Keepie uppie challenge 27th

Rugby challenge 93rd

Speed bounce challenge 46th

Skipping challenges

If you are interested in trying another physical activity challenge, Jodi from Skipping School – a regular visitor to school, is running a daily skipping skill challenge this week. Sadly, Year 2 and Year 4 have missed out on their skipping festivals this year so these videos will help the children to recap the skills they have learnt at school.

Virtual sports day

So it wasn’t quite our normal sports day but today we’ve enjoyed taking part in the virtual school games sports day.

First, we watched the opening ceremony video and took part in the warm up before completing the different activities. All the children tried hard to beat their personal best and the results have been submitted.

We’ve even created our own physical activity challenges that we’ll try out next week.

Did you take part at home? Hope you’ve entered your results. You’ve got until 12pm on Wednesday 08 July.
