A visitor for Key Stage 1

Posted on Tuesday 29 October 2013 by Mr Roundtree

On Thursday, Year 1 and Year 2 had a surprise visitor in class. Florence Nightingale popped in to see Year 1 and hear all about what they had learned that afternoon about her life and she spent most of the afternoon teaching Year 2. The children were very interested to hear all about hospital conditions when Florence worked during the Crimean War and couldn’t believe it when she didn’t even know what lights or pens were!

It’s half-term…

…so no specific homework, spellings or tables this week.  It’s a good time to relax and enjoy some time with your children – have you visited the free exhibition of Anthony Browne pictures at Leeds City Museum, for example?

Thanks d:Side – we learnt lots!

Posted on Thursday 17 October 2013 by Mrs Taylor

Today, Catherine, from d:Side, came to visit to give us lots of information about our body and keeping it healthy.  Judging by the responses, the class have learnt lots so far in our Doctor Doctor topic.  We also managed to learn about what makes a healthy lunchbox and the safe use of medicines.

  • “I learnt all about bodies, bones and muscles.”
  • “I learnt that we grow when we are asleep.”
  • “There are veins to take our blood around.”

Doctor Doctor

A real doctor came to visit us at school today.  She spoke to us about her job as a doctor and she told us how we can keep ourselves healthy.  We were able to use her stethoscope – did you know that if you listen to your tummy with a stethoscope you can still hear your heartbeat as well?  We discovered that our tummies make very strange noises!  A few of us had our pulses checked, fortunately we were all very healthy!

Marvellous measures

Posted on Saturday 28 September 2013 by Mrs Weekes

A week’s learning about measures ended with lots of measuring of arms, legs and heads.  As part of the big topic, Doctor Doctor, measurements of our bodies were compared.  Measuring length can be done using non-standard units and standard units.  The week was started by measuring with paperclips, dinosaurs and highlighters, then home-made tape measures were used to practise the actual concept of using a tape and then the standard units of centimetres and metres were introduced.

  • How many centimetres in a metre?
  • Who had the biggest hand span?
  • How do you measure a hand span?

…all questions that you can ask Year 1.

How do you make a metal pin or paperclip move without touching it?

Ask Year 1 children and they will be able to tell you.

PE Days

Posted on Saturday 07 September 2013 by Mrs Weekes

Please make sure your children have their PE kits in school on Monday and Tuesday as these are our days for PE.  This is an essential part of our curriculum so it’s really important that children have the correct clothing so that they can fully participate in these lessons.

Here is a reminder of what they should be wearing for PE (copied from our uniform policy):

PE: children should wear white t-shirt, black shorts / tracksuit bottoms and pumps

Thank you for your support.
