What time is it?
By the end of Year 2, children should be able to achieve the following objectives in relation to telling the time (taken from the Year 2 Core Subjects expectations).
- compare and sequence intervals of time
- tell the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour
- write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times
- know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day
This is always a difficult area of Maths for children to master but we have been particularly impressed by two time ‘boffins’ who shared their knowledge to teach others.
You can continue to embed these Maths skills at home by asking your child the time at different times of the day. We have been focusing on the analogue time.

Our own ‘tin forest’ is growing well and we’ve been making lots of observations to see the changes in such a short time.

Next week in our Green Fingers topic, we will be focusing our learning on trees. In preparation for this, children are encouraged to bring in leaves to be used for classifying and identifying. Just one example of each leaf is needed and these should be brought in next Monday.

Super scientists
We took advantage of the Big Pedal and used the children’s scooters to investigate movement and in particular how to speed up and slow down.
Back in the classroom, we continued this learning by carrying out a scientific test.
What would you want to test with the following equipment?
Emily suggested we test how far the car travels when it goes down the ramp at different heights so we planned a test considering our test question, predictions, method and safety. A fair test is very important so we decided which variable would change (the height of the ramp) and what we would keep the same (the ramp surface, car, starting position and who would let the car go).
When the ramp was placed at the top of the ramp, the car travelled 114cm.
When the ramp was placed at the middle of the ramp, the car travelled 105cm.
At the bottom of the ramp, the car didn’t travel at all!
Measuring and data collection were important parts of the tests.
Finally, we considered our initial question: does the car travel further when the ramp is higher? From our results, we concluded that the car did travel further when the ramp was higher.

Peaceful problem solving
Recently in our SEAL learning we have been looking at ways to solve problems. Where possible, children are encouraged to try and resolve problems together and we used drama to test this out using the following script.
READY…
Both ‘sides’ should be calm – it’s never any good to make up when you are angry.
STEADY…
Take it in turns to say what you are feeling and why; and what you would like to happen.
Listen well-don’t interrupt.
GO…
Pick a solution that everyone is happy with.

Tour de Yorkshire themed menu
Catering Leeds, our school meal provider, will be running a special Tour de Yorkshire themed menu on Tuesday 25 April.
Please contact the office by Thursday 30th March if your child would like a school dinner on this day.
A great start
We’ve started the Big Pedal today with an impressive 40% participation rate on Day 1. Did you cucle or scoot to school? If not, there are another nine days to go.

A big thank you to Dom Jacques for supporting the event and organising the bike and scooter donations. These donations have meant that even more children can take part in the event.
Also, thank you to the Year 6 helpers who are coordinating the data gathering on a daily basis.
Help others take part in the Big Pedal
Do you have any bikes or scooters that you no longer use?
If you’d like to donate them, please bring them to school any morning this week and provided they are in a working condition, we’ll offer them to people who don’t have one to use in the upcoming Big Pedal event. Please hand them to Dom Jacques who will be in the playground to take receipt.
Any that aren’t roadworthy or are unwanted will be donated to local recycling charities such as the Yorkshire Bank Bike Library. The nearest Bike Library is at Moor Allerton Library (near Sainsburys) and they offer loan bikes to families for up to 14 days for free.
Three days to go
The Big Pedal starts on Monday 20th March for two weeks and we’re looking forward to seeing as many people as possible take to two wheels for their journey (or final part of their journey) to school. There are two lots of prizes up for grabs:

Drawn daily for schools who achieve a minimum 15% participation (roughly 31 children for Moortown Primary) each day.

Pupil prizes include two stunt scooters, an action camera, a bike pump, a copy of ‘The Boy who Biked the World’ by Alastair Humphreys and a Gruffalo Easter egg. Supporter prizes include two £5 M&S vouchers, a ‘hot drink and cake for two’ at Filmore & Union and a Lindt chocolate bunny.
Winners will be drawn during assembly on 31 March, the final Big Pedal day and last day of term.
How to win – pupils
Please fill in the tickets on the letter sent home, cut them out and put them in your school bag. Each morning you scoot or cycle, put your ticket in THE BIG PEDAL CONTAINER in your classroom.
How to win – parents/carers/supporters
Wherever possible, please take part and join your children on their rides to school. It’s a bit of fun, helps to reduce congestion and you could even win a prize. Each day you scoot or cycle, simply pick up a ticket from the school playground, write your name on it and pop it into the Big Pedal container. The more days you join in, the more chances you have of winning a prize.
