This week’s spelling activity focuses on the spelling rule, double up for a short vowel sound.

The following double consonants are common in the English language: gg, ff, tt, ss, pp, ll, bb, dd.

How many words can you come up with that include these double consonants? Once you’ve got your list of words (at least 20), tick the ones that have a short vowel sound before the double consonant.

This week’s spellings aim to help the children understand when to use different homophones. Practise using these spellings correctly in sentences and discuss ways to remember when to use which homophone – any good ideas you’ve got could be shared in class. There will be a test next week on Thursday 24 October.

This week’s spelling activity focuses on the ‘ue’ sound and the alternative graphemes for them: ue, u-e, ew.

Think of ten words which include the ‘ue’ sound and list them here:

  1. ____________________________
  2. ____________________________
  3. ____________________________
  4. ____________________________
  5. ____________________________
  6. ____________________________
  7. ____________________________
  8. ____________________________
  9. ____________________________

Now place your words into the grid which is in your homework book. They can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, backwards, criss-crossing. Fill in the blank space around your words with random letters and challenge someone to complete your word search during homework review on Thursday 10 October.

This week’s spelling activity focuses on the ‘ie’ and ‘oe’ sounds and the alternative graphemes for them:

ie, y, i,  i-e

oe, oa, o, o-e, ow

See how many words you can think of that include the ‘ie’ or the ‘oe’ sounds and record them in your homework book – try sorting them according to the grapheme use to make the sounds. I;m looking for useful spelling practice like the examples show on the sheet that is now stuck in the back of the children’s books. This homework is due on Thursday 26 September and there will be no test on Friday.

This week’s spellings is to recap homophones previously taught. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. Your child needs to know which homophone to use in a sentence dictated to them. These will be tested on 05/07/19. The homophones are:

  • your/you’re
  • its/it’s
  • of/off
  • they’re/their/there
  • which/witch
  • hour/our
  • mite/might
  • wear/where

We are learning our 8 times tables.

This week, spelling looks at words with the ‘u’ sound spelled with an ‘ou’. There is no list to learn. Instead, your child should find as many words that follow this rule and make a list in their homework book.

The words ‘trouble’, ‘young’ and ‘country’ are examples of this rule.

This is due in on Thursday 27 June 2019.

We are learning our 8 times table.
