Computing: sequence in algorithms using Scratch Jr

Posted on Thursday 29 April 2021 by Mr Wilks

In our computing lesson today, we’ve been learning about how important sequence is when creating algorithms.

The children have been creating an animation of a conversation between two or more characters. They had to sequence the conversation really carefully so that the it happens in the correct order. To get this right, children had to tweak and debug their algorithms.

Skip into summer

Posted on Wednesday 28 April 2021 by Mrs Taylor

This term, all classes will be taking part in the West Yorkshire Skip into Summer project with Skipping School. We are excited to be part of the 136 schools and almost 33,000 children taking part!

As part of this project, we have skipping ropes available to buy at a subsidised price of £3.

If your child would like to buy a rope, to keep learning their new skills at home, they will be on sale, outside the Year 1 classroom in the middle playground, 3:10-3:30pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Exact change would be helpful.

The Captain Tom 100 Challenge

Posted on Tuesday 27 April 2021 by Mrs Weekes

On Friday, we will be deciding which charity we’ll be supporting this year. As our first fundraising event, we’ll be taking part in the ‘Captain Tom 100 Challenge’. Each class will be doing something 100 times on Tuesday 04 May. All we ask is that each child brings in 100 pence (it doesn’t have to be 100 pennies, it can be a £1 coin!) and all money raised will be donated to the charity we have chosen. There will be a bucket at the gate for you to leave your donation.
Here are the details of what each class is doing:
Reception – creating 100 handprints
Year 1 – running 100 laps of the new playground (100 in total so an average of 3 each)
Year 2 – 100 skips
Year 3 – 100 bounces of a basketball
Year 4 – 100 skips
Year 5 – running 100 laps of the new and old playground (100 in total so an average of 3 each)
Year 6 – 100 goals scored as quickly as possible
Thank you for your support – we will let you know how much money we raise!

Posted on Thursday 01 April 2021 by Mr Wilks

Speeches have been delivered. Candidates have been questioned. Votes have been cast. Exit polls suggest a close race. Results will be announced after lunch!

A massive well done to everyone who took a safe risk and put themselves forward as a candidate. We really enjoyed and were really impressed by your speeches. A lot of time and thought went into them. I’m sure whoever’s elected in Year 4 will do a great job!

Yorkshire Dance virtual dance workshops

Posted on Friday 26 March 2021 by Mrs Taylor

Yesterday, all classes took part in dance workshops, led by dance artist Ellen, as part of the Yorkshire Dance RE:FRESH dance festival.

From Reception to Year 6, all the children copied, explored and performed different dance moves in their workshops.

While we can’t have visitors in school at the moment, this was a great virtual project we could get involved with.

Here are some comments from the Year 1 children.

I loved it because of all the moves we did.

I loved it because I like all the animals.

I liked to see you smiling.

It was amazing and you were amazing, Ellen.

As part of RE:FRESH, there are performances being screened tonight and on Saturday, as well as workshops and a fun dance challenge. All of the details can be found here.
Yorkshire Dance also have classes, specifically for primary aged children, on Saturdays. Here are the details and booking for the summer term are now open.

DT: designing carnival costumes

Posted on Thursday 18 March 2021 by Mr Wilks

In this DT lesson, we’ve gone through some of the stages of the design process.

The class took on the role of carnival costumes designers and split into troupes to design their costumes. First, they had to decide their theme and then do some internet investigation for inspiration.

Next, they made some initial sketches for their carnival king and queen costumes. They had to think about what the costume would look like but also think how the costume would be supported so that it could be moved without collapsing.

After that, they reflected on their sketches with their troupe and made some tweaks before colouring and annotating the designs.

Finally, the troupes looked at each other’s designs and fed back what they liked about them. They also evaluated their own and fed back on improvements or changes they would make.

Hello to all of you Times Tables Rock Stars,

This Friday is Red Nose Day and the people at TTRS have come up with a great challenge to raise some extra money.

Prices for a new nose start at 50,000 coins so we’d best get saving.

We’ve got until Friday –  Red Nose Day. Let’s do our bit to help the nation reach that £5,000 target.
