Year 5/6 netball event

Posted on Tuesday 29 April 2025 by Mrs Taylor

As part of our involvement with the Leeds Well Schools Partnership, we took a team of 8 Year 5/6 children to a Bee Netball Development Event at Allerton High.

The event was aimed at developing netball skills and the children put them into practise in some games at the end. Well done to all the children for representing our school so well.

To take part in netball outside of school, here are details of a local club.

What is WWII?

Posted on Friday 25 April 2025 by Miss Wilson

We’ve started our new topic for this half term – history! We’ve been very excited about it and the children know lots already.

Before we got started, we looked at our new history vocabulary and rated our confidence as a class: red is never heard it before, orange is heard it but not confident and green is I am fully confident.

Today, we learnt about what WWII was and how it began.

We made a lot of great notes before we recorded a report to announce the outbreak of war.

Help at home by discussing how this lesson links with the following historical concepts:

  • invasion
  • power

The other concepts we learn about are trade, inequality and innovation.

We met a famous author!

Posted on Wednesday 23 April 2025 by Miss Wilson

It was Dermot O’Leary! We walked to a different primary school to hear about his new book.

He answered lots of questions – including Ryan’s!

We even did a draw along with his illustrator! It was really fun and we were all able to draw his main character Agent Feathers.

He was really nice and even signed some of our sketch books!

Luca said, “It was really inspiring.”

Rayhan said, “He had such great ideas and imagination.”

Raheem said, “It was really fun going to see a different school and of course meeting Dermot O’Leary.”

D&T: pasta bake

Posted on Friday 04 April 2025 by Miss Wilson

We were very excited to do some D&T: cooking this week! We made a delicious pasta bake. There were some very clean bowls at the end – including the spinach!

Don’t adjust your device – Y6 really were washing up!!!

The finished article…

We practise so many skills! Like the bridge and claw method for chopping, weighing, measuring, grating and stirring.

Help at home by discussing the very many ways that we stayed safe. See if you can get at least five. (We managed 16 in class!)

Pedometers in computing

Posted on Thursday 03 April 2025 by Miss Wilson

This half term, we’ve been building up to making our own pedometers!

And we pulled it off!

As always, we had to use logical reasoning as a team.

We measured how effective they were by counting our steps and comparing it to how many had been recorded on the micro:bit.

Help at home by linking this learning to our computing vocabulary:

  • simulation
  • repetition
  • decomposition
  • computer network
  • internet
  • variable
  • selection
  • world wide web

Leeds Rhinos Easter activities

Posted on Wednesday 02 April 2025 by Mrs Taylor

On Friday 18 April, Leeds Rhinos are hosting their annual family day, where all child tickets (seating and standing) are just £5. As well as the Rhinos match against Huddersfield Giants, there are a host of activities that the whole family can enjoy – all included in the price of entry.

There is also a free open training session and meet the players event at AMT Headingley Stadium, during the Easter Holidays, on Tuesday 15 April. Children and families will have the opportunity to watch the Rhinos train, meet Ronnie the Rhino and get autographs/pictures with the players at the end of the session.

English School Swimming Association North East Heat

Posted on Wednesday 02 April 2025 by Mrs Taylor

Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 swimmers who took part in the English School Swimming Association North East Heat at The Grammar School at Leeds. For most of the team, this was the first competitive swimming event they had taken part in so well done to all the children for their determination and also for taking responsibility by practising prior to the event. The team were then inspired by watching our City of Leeds swimmer take part in his individual races.

I’m going to practise more swimming to get faster to compete again in Year 6.

This was a great opportunity for us! Not everyone gets the chance to do this.

Living and learning: changes

Posted on Monday 31 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

This week’s living and learning lesson was about changes.

How might someone feel going to high school?

And what is our advice to them?

British Library: Refugee’s Journey

Posted on Friday 28 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

Today, it was a pleasure to welcome back Liz from the British Library to do a drama and reading workshop with us.

Our session focused on Azzi In Between, a book about a girl who has to leave her country because it’s not safe.

We explored the story with lots of drama and freeze frames.

We also got to play lots of drama games which were really fun.

We explored different scenes of the book in our groups…

…before putting together the entire performance with each group contributing a part to the bigger show.

Help at home by asking your child to explain what was happening in this picture and why! Or, explain what emotions Azzi felt throughout the story.

Moortown netballers

Posted on Wednesday 26 March 2025 by Mrs Taylor

Well done to our Year 5/6 netballers who competed in the Bee Netball competition at Allerton High.

In each match, the team showed great teamwork and resilience. It’s great to see their netball skills progressing. Well done!

We’d also like to thank parents for helping with transport for this event.

Through our partnership with Leeds Rhinos, have a look at this special offer to see some more live netball this weekend.

Here are some local netball opportunities too.
