British Library: Refugee’s Journey

Posted on Friday 28 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

Today, it was a pleasure to welcome back Liz from the British Library to do a drama and reading workshop with us.

Our session focused on Azzi In Between, a book about a girl who has to leave her country because it’s not safe.

We explored the story with lots of drama and freeze frames.

We also got to play lots of drama games which were really fun.

We explored different scenes of the book in our groups…

…before putting together the entire performance with each group contributing a part to the bigger show.

Help at home by asking your child to explain what was happening in this picture and why! Or, explain what emotions Azzi felt throughout the story.

Moortown netballers

Posted on Wednesday 26 March 2025 by Mrs Taylor

Well done to our Year 5/6 netballers who competed in the Bee Netball competition at Allerton High.

In each match, the team showed great teamwork and resilience. It’s great to see their netball skills progressing. Well done!

We’d also like to thank parents for helping with transport for this event.

Through our partnership with Leeds Rhinos, have a look at this special offer to see some more live netball this weekend.

Here are some local netball opportunities too.

Living & Learning: being me

Posted on Monday 24 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

Living and learning this week was about influences and peer pressure…

…both positive and negative.

We discussed what peer pressure means to us and what might happen as a result.

Feeling confident means we feel like we can stand up for ourselves and say no if we need to.

We paid ourselves some compliments to remind ourselves how awesome we are.

Analysing Rugby

Posted on Thursday 20 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

This half term, we’ve LOVED playing rugby. It’s been great for lots of us to try a completely new sport and get loads better at it over the half term!

We’ve been practising throwing, catching and kicking.

This lesson, we did some video analysis.

A member of our group filmed our technique for throwing, catching or kicking…

…before feeding back to the players.

It was really useful and definitely helped us improve.

Help at home by discussing some of our PE vocabulary: to evade, space and stamina.

Oracy

Posted on Friday 14 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

Today, in reading, we practised some oracy skills in order to prepare for a debate.

One partner had to describe, using good speaking skills, a picture for their partner to draw. Then, we swapped over.

We discussed how you had to choose precise words so your partner could draw accurately.

We had a lot of fun.

Help at home by playing games like this, or other barrier games, to sharpen your oracy skills!

Performing poetry

Posted on Wednesday 12 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

This week, we’ve been reading a poem called Girl Footballer by Jackie Kay.

Jackie Kay is an inspiring poet who writes fun poems but also serious poems about discrimination and equality.

Today, we performed the poem in pairs! We got some tips from Michael Rosen and came up with some R2s:

  • varied tone
  • varied pace
  • varied volume
  • engaging actions

Then, it was time to practise…

…before performing.

Help at home by reading some poems!

West Yorkshire cross country final

Posted on Thursday 06 March 2025 by Mrs Taylor

We were very proud of our five Key Stage 2 children who took part in the West Yorkshire Cross Country Final at Temple Newsam today in the glorious sunshine.

In tough, competitive conditions, with the best runners from across West Yorkshire, they all put in 100% effort in their races and were a great support for each other. The children should feel proud of competing at this level. We even had a top 10 finisher out of 146 runners and our Year 3 girls team came 6th place our of 21 schools. What an amazing team effort!

Thank you to parents who helped with transport and supported at the event.

Computing with micro:bits!

Posted on Wednesday 05 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

This week, we started our online computing learning. The excitement in the room was PALPABLE!

We’re using micro:bits…

…tiny computers that you can program to do a virtually unlimited number of awesome things!

This linked to simulation (one of our computing words) because the makecode website where you program the micro:bit has an ‘emulator’. This shows you what your code will do once it’s been downloaded to your physical micro:bit.

Once we were finished exploring, it was time to download the code and see it in action! We made it say hello to us, or show a heart or play a tune when you pressed a certain button.

We are so looking forward to the rest of the topic!

Help at home by asking your child about our computing words: repetition, internet, simulation, World Wide Web, computer network, variable and selection.

Our letters are on their way!

Posted on Tuesday 04 March 2025 by Miss Wilson

Today, we finally were able to venture out to our local post box to post our letters to Steve Reed, the environment minister, about stopping climate change. It was very exciting!

There were big cheers as the letter went in!

You’re never too small to create a big change. All it starts with is a single step! (Or quite a few to the nearest post box.)

“The atmosphere was electric! Everybody had loads of fun,” Vivienne described.

“I hope our letters can persuade Steve Reed to do something about climate change and if it does, this is great example of small things, big changes,” beamed Grace.

Jack said: “Everybody was so enthusiastic about writing their letters. We finished them so fast because we were so excited!”

“We had a great time posting the letters. Miss Wilson gave us a motivational message about it not mattering how small you are, you can always change the world a little bit,” said Hidayah.

Raheem explained, “We had a democratic vote about who should put the letter in the post box.”
