Year 1 Spelling

13 September 2013

Posted on Thursday 12 September 2013 by Mrs Weekes

If you are familiar with how we have done spellings in KS1 previously, then you will see that we are trying something different this year.

All the children in Y1 and Y2 have been mixed up depending on their phonic knowledge.  There is a daily phonics lesson, ensuring a secure knowledge which can be applied in writing and reading.

There are three groups: red, yellow and green.  The children know which group they are in and there is a coloured sticker on the front of their learning list book.  You will notice that the spellings below are grouped in these colours so please make sure you know which list you should be learning with your child.  The spellings are linked with previous learning.

All spellings will be tested on Friday 20 September.

If you have any questions please come and ask.

There will be no usual spelling test next week, and so no new words to learn this week. Instead of the normal test, the national phonics screening test will take place.  There is no date set for which children will be tested on which day; as always, avoid unnecessary absences.

I suggest children spend each night looking through old spelling lists. Get your child to read and sound out the words.

Please see me if you have any questions.

This week, we’re revisiting words which have a split digraph.

Remember a split digraph is when the ‘e’ at the end of words works with another letter to make a longer sound. Think about the difference between hop and hopeboth have three sounds (phonemes), but the split digraph in hope creates a ‘long o’ sound. Other examples in the list below is the difference between Tim and time and made and made.

These words will be tested on Friday 14 June.

like
home
pole
use
huge
cake
made
ride

It’s the half-term break…

This week we are looking at a trigraph: a three letter grapheme, where three letters represent one sound (phoneme), as in air (three letters making one sound).

These words will be tested on Friday 25 May 2013.

hairbrush
chair
airport
stair

This week, we’re learning to spell words with alternative spellings for the ‘long i’ phoneme – the ‘long i’ sound in words such as those in the list.  Some words use igh, some use i-e, some use a y (often at the end of the word).

You can help your child’s spelling:

  • look out for these when reading, or anywhere in the home, in shops etc
  • prepare labels with igh, i-e, y – read out words and see if your child can say which spelling pattern (which grapheme) they use
  • think about other words which use ighi-e or y to create a ‘long i’ sound – how many can your child find?
  • are there other ways to create this sound?

These words will be tested on Friday 17 May 2013.

fight
light
sky
eye
my
ride
night
pine
