DT food technology – fruit salad

Posted on Thursday 14 March 2024 by Mr McGriffiths

Yesterday, we had our spring term DT food technology session. We made a fruit salad and we had a brilliant time. We had to use lots of different skills including, measuring, claw grip, bridge hold, mixing and peeling. The children listened really carefully and made sure they kept safe during the cooking.

We washed our hands to make sure we didn’t spread germs.

We used the claw grip when we were cutting.

We made sure the knife was pointing away from us.

We listened to the adults carefully and followed their instructions.

We used lots and lots of different types of fruit and there was even some we haven’t tried before! When it came to eating, everybody (well most!) loved it and there was lots of clean bowls!

Help at home by talking about healthy eating as well as trying out the fruit salad recipe that was sent home.

PE: dance

Posted on Thursday 14 March 2024 by Miss Wilson

This week, we moved onto a new unit of learning in PE: dance!

After the successes of gymnastics and yoga this year, we were excited to get underway.

We focused on pathways and suiting our movements to the style of music. We’ve listened to two contrasting pieces: Le Freak by Chic and Storm Interlude from “Peter Grimes” by Benjamin Britten.

We enjoyed our warm up called Dancing Whispers. The idea is to get the same dance move to travel from the back of the line to the front by passing it from person to person – but you can only watch it once! It was very funny.

Help at home by discussing how the skills of dance transfer to other sports.

Design and Technology: food

Posted on Wednesday 13 March 2024 by Mrs Taylor

This week, Year 2 have been using their food preparation skills to create their latest product, fruit salad.

This forms part of our Design and Technology food learning which involves following a recipe to create a product each term.

First, we got ready to cook.

Here are some of the skills we used.

Draining

Peeling and segmenting

Bridge hold (for chopping)

Claw grip (for chopping)

Measuring

Mixing

Finally, the children got to enjoy their fruit salad.

I LOVED my fruit salad because it had lots of different fruits in it and it is so healthy.

I especially liked the strawberries and I would add more next time.

Next time, I will add different types of fruit like pineapple or melon.

Next time, I would add more orange juice.

I’ve never had kiwi fruit before but I really liked it.

I will try frozen raspberries again. They are really juicy.

We always evaluated our product afterwards to see how it could be changed it next time.

Well done to all the children who worked safely and sensibly with Ms Canning.

Help at home: your child has taken this recipe home. Can they demonstrate some of their food preparation skills by making this again at home.

Food technology: pitta pizzas

Posted on Wednesday 13 March 2024 by Mr Roundtree

Last week, Year 4 made pitta pizzas!

We practised our chopping skills…

Covered our pittas in passata and our toppings…

And baked them in the oven until the mozzarella had melted!

The children have been sent home with the recipe and we would love to see what you make. Be as creative with your toppings as you like!

Science: What are the different food groups?

Posted on Tuesday 12 March 2024 by Miss Goswami

For the last time, Year 5 were joined by our visitors from the University of Leeds. In this lesson the children looked at the different food groups. They also learnt:

  • the benefits of different food groups
  • the importance of a balanced diet
  • why diet is so important for our bodies

The children took part in an experiment to see how too much salt can affect our body. Year 5 placed pieces of potato in water and salty water. They will be watching over the next couple of days to see the results.

We then ventured outside to play a food group game. An adult shouted a food out and the children had to run to which food group they think it was. They all did amazingly in this game.

Help at home: Name the 5 food groups and give examples of different foods that fit into them.

Food technology!

Posted on Friday 08 March 2024 by Miss Birch

Year 3 have made pitta pizzas! Miss Kidd took 3 groups to make them this morning and they all did a fantastic job.

They practised using their bridge cutting skill to cut the tomatoes and mushrooms. They also used tablespoons and teaspoons to measure out the tomato purée and herbs. They’re really simple to make so have a go at home! The children have been sent home with the recipe and we would love to see your creations. Can you use different toppings?

What is a microhabitat?

Posted on Thursday 07 March 2024 by Mrs Lake

Today in Science, Year 2 explored microhabitats in the school grounds.

First, we thought about different microhabitats and what living things might live there.

We looked for living things in different microhabitats. We discussed the microhabitat’s features and how it meets the living things needs for survival.

World book day!

Posted on Thursday 07 March 2024 by Mrs Lake

Today we celebrated reading in Year 2!

The children looked fantastic in their world book day outfits. We enjoyed talking about our favourite characters and books.

We started the day with an assembly celebrating the origins of world book day and listening to some of the teachers read extracts from their favourite books. Mr Wilks talked to us about how books can mean different things to people and how to spend the £1 book token.

Later in the morning, we enjoyed paired reading with Year 4. It was fantastic! all the children enjoyed sharing their favourite stories and reading aloud to a Year 4 child.

Finally, after playtime, we had a webinar with John Patrick Green – author of the Investigators books. We listened to how he creates the books and had a go at drawing some of the characters. The drawings were fantastic!

Help at home by discussing the activities your child has done today and looking at the free books they can buy with their £1 book token.
