Science: Does the amount of seeds affect the growth?
Does the amount of seeds affect the growth of a plant?
Year 3 have set up a test to see whether the amount of seeds in one pot affects the growth of a plant and more specifically a dwarf sunflower!
What are we measuring?
We are measuring the height of the plants in centimetres every week.
What are we keeping the same?
We are keeping the size of the pots, the amount we water them and conditions (windowsill) the same.
What are we changing?
We are changing the amount seeds in each pot: 1, 2, 4 and 8 seeds per pot.
We went out in the sun to plant these and to plant our own individual sunflower seeds too!
The children will measure how these grow over the weeks and take them home.
Check back here to see updates!
Help at home by predicting what you think will happen to our 1, 2, 4 and 8 seeds growth.
Living and Learning: RSE
This week, we’ve been learning about Relationships and Sex Education.
Here’s what some Y6s had to say about our unit of learning:
“It was a little weird but also interesting at the same time.”
“I thought it was interesting and I enjoyed the learning like how to look after a baby.”
“I quite enjoyed it because it explained how all of us are here at this moment!”
“It was a little uncomfortable at times but it was really interesting.”
During and after each session, we always had opportunities to ask questions, as long as they followed the rules, and we discussed some of them at the end of the lesson or at the start of the next. It was a great way to feel safe and heard.

Here are some snippets of our learning. We covered topics such as conception, pregnancy and consent (which of course can be seen in a variety of scenarios).

PE: Cricket
This half-term, our PE topic has been cricket. We have been practising our batting, bowling and fielding skills. We have been perfecting the ready position in each of these rolls. In the past couple of lessons, we have been applying our improved skills in games of kwik cricket.
Help at home: Can you show the ready positions? What are the rules of kwik cricket?
Summer 2: Week 4
Literacy
This week, we’ve been reading Clean Up! by Nathan Bryon. After reading the book, we thought about how we could look after our oceans, animals and earth. It has helped us to understand that we are responsible for our own litter. We had a go at making some eye-catching posters to help get our important messages across.

To help keep our school tidy, we had a go at litter picking.

Art
Yesterday, we talked about Alexander Calder and had a look at some images of his famous moving mobiles. We talked about the different 3d shapes and had a go at creating our own representations of his work. We’ll continue to create our mobiles next week.

Living and Learning
This week, we’ve been recognising our strengths and saying good things about ourselves. I am good at…
Zo – swimming
Zu – writing
Ha – football
Ar – gymnastics
Geo – basketball
Ay – cricket
Po – being helpful
Je – being a good friend
Learning journey drop in
Your child should have a brought home a learning journey drop in letter. Please make sure your return your sign-up slip by Friday 4th July.
School trip
We’re really looking forward to our school trip to Nell Bank on Wednesday. Your child will need:
- Named water bottle
- Packed lunch
- Suitable coat
- Suitable footwear
Your child does not need their school bag on this day!
Temple Newsam Trip
Year 1 went on an amazing trip to Temple Newsam today! The weather was kind and the children were amazing!
We started off the day looking really carefully at the pigs. We learnt they are intelligent and actually very clean! We saw some piglets who had only been born on Tuesday – it was very exciting.
After that, we had to construct our own structure out of sticks (just like one of the three little pigs!). We tried really hard and I was really impressed with their buildings.
After lunch, we explored the farm even more and found lots of amazing animals. We even spotted a duck egg by the pond! Finally we had a play in the playground. I was very impressed with the children’s engagement, behaviour and stamina! We are very proud. Hope they sleep well tonight!

RE Drop Down Morning
This week, we’ve been learning all about Buddhism in our RE Drop Down morning.
We learnt about where the religion originated, how it began and what is important to people who follow it.
Buddhists follow the teaching of Buddha, a prince who saw suffering, greed and pain in the world around him. He began to live a modest life and renounced his privileged existence. He achieved enlightenment.
Meditation and karma are really important to Buddhists. They believe if you live a good life and make good choices, you will be reincarnated into a positive new existence.
We created some drama to show how good karma can affect a person’s rebirth, according to Buddhists.

Food Technology: Savoury Scones
Today, Year 4 had food technology and made savoury scones! Lots of us had tried scones with jam and cream before but most of us had never eaten a savoury scone before, let alone made them.
They were full of healthy vegetables like courgettes, carrot and sweetcorn. This was to make them filling and a part of our balanced diets.

We worked in two groups to make a batch of scones so we all had to share the jobs. The two main skills we learned and practised were grating and kneading.
We had to be safe when grating the vegetables as it can be tricky to keep the slippery grater up-right! We made sure our fingers weren’t too close.
Kneading our dough was difficult to start with as the dough was quite sticky. We had to use lots of flour on the surface and on our hands to stop it from sticking.
Here are some photos!
The scones came out fantastically and the children loved them! They’re a yummy and healthy snack.
Help at home: use the recipe below to remake the savoury scones but try adding different vegetables.
Junior Warrior
Last Friday, we had a BLAST at Junior Warrior!
Here we were before the race looking very clean…

Ready to take on the challenge!
At the end, we made sure to celebrate when anybody crossed the line.

And here we were after those 15 fun and muddy obstacles. Everyone made it back in possession of both shoes!

What away to celebrate a fantastic year!
Living and Learning: Relationships
Over the past 3 weeks, we have had a plethora of RSE lessons covering a range of topics. This week, we talked about relationships and what makes them healthy as well as families and what makes ours different and unique.
To start, we defined a relationship as “the way in which two or more people or things are connected, or the state of being connected” and then talked about the different relationships we have in our lives. Then, we discussed healthy and unhealthy relationships and thought about how we could support and improve them. Here are a few ideas:
- being kind, considerate and respectful
- being honest
- listening to each other
- respecting personal space, boundaries and privacy
- accepting others’ differences
We then talked about similarities and differences between our families and focused in our why our families are important to us. Here are a few responses. Families provide:
- love
- care
- support
- food
- shelter
- safety
Help at home: Talk with your child about the different relationships they have.
Numbots
With six Numbots certificates awarded this week, it’s great to see the children continuing to work hard at home to achieve their next level.
Certificates are awarded every Tuesday so let’s see how many more we can achieve before the end of the year.
