Living and Learning – drugs, alcohol and tobacco
The last couple of weeks have been focused on talking about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. This topic is really important. The children became familiar and educated on these substances so that once they are old enough, they can make safe and informed decisions on what they choose to do.
The year 4 children identified how certain drugs and household items (i.e. paracetamol or surface cleaner) should be used safely. They were really sensible and knew exactly what to do:
- Do not touch these items without permission from a trusted adult.
- The instructions on the products must be followed.
- Keep them out of reach of small children.
D:side came in the following week to talk about alcohol and it was a fantastic session with lots of interactive activities that the children loved! The session wasn’t to worry the children about alcohol but just to make them aware of what it is and the rules around it. The children began acting out how they would respond if a friend was pressuring them to drink alcohol and they even got to try the alcohol glasses on and have a walk around the classroom – tricky!
Living and Learning – I recognise that family and friends are important.
For the previous few weeks, our Living and Learning lessons were focused on RSE.
Despite some of them being nervous, Year 4 were incredibly mature and grown up in the lessons. I was so impressed!
Over 3 weeks, we discussed the biological differences between males and females and how there must be a male and female in order to have a baby. However, we also discussed how some families e.g. same sex parents, would have a baby!
We learnt some new key vocabulary and the children became more and more comfortable when using these words.
Finally, we spoke about how male and females change throughout their life. We grow, we have different responsibilities and our roles in life change.
Pupil health questionnaire homework
This week, our whole school homework is I can share my views about health.
We’re proud to be a happy and healthy school.
Each year, we ask you to complete a short health questionnaire. Your views can help us to become even happier and healthier.
Parents/carers: please complete this survey with your child, to find out their views on some of our key health issues at school, and comment at the end.
Please submit before Friday 15 July 2022 and as an extra incentive the class that submit the most responses will earn an extra playtime next week!
Super Sports Day
What an amazing day yesterday! Our first full sports day since the pandemic and we came back with an amazing bang! Mrs Taylor did a grand job of organising everything, as always, and all the helpers that made it run smoothly were brilliant. Mr Roundtree is a little croaky today after his commentating but I’m sure you’ll agree, it was well worth it. You will see a photo of Mrs Burke completing her final egg and spoon race as a member of staff but you never know, she might be guest of honour next year. Thank you to everyone who came along to watch!

Living and learning: drug education
This half term, part of our Living and Learning focus includes drug education. We have arranged for visitors to come into school to help to deliver this key aspect of education.
We have been working with d:side for many years and they will be visiting school to deliver sessions to all classes based around drug education on Monday 11 July and Wednesday 13 July.
d:side is a comprehensive drug & alcohol education programme that encourages children to make positive & healthy life-choices whilst promoting a pro-active attitude to life. They focus on developing the children’s knowledge, skills & attitude, whilst equipping them with the appropriate life skills to successfully manage sensitive situations with peers & encourage a positive approach to life.
As part of this visit, Dave Hill, from d:side, will be available in the playground after school on Monday 11 July 3:05-3:30pm to answer any questions about this learning.
Skipping Festival!
Hello!
Year 4 had their skipping festival today at Leeds Trinity University and they did an absolutely amazing job! The teamwork and support they showed between one another was outstanding and they cheered each other on when some were feeling a bit nervous.
Overall, we won a mixture of bronze, silver and gold awards on the individual skills and we did an amazing job on the group skips too!
In between the skills, the children had the chance to skip, dance and sing along to the music.
A big well done to all of the Year 4s for trying their best and representing Moortown so well.
Living and Learning – Body Image
This week in Year 4, we spoke about what body image is and how important it is that we have a positive and healthy body image.
The media are well known for editing and modifying images of celebrities and models to fit their idea of beauty. We identified how certain images have been edited and why the media would want to do this. We decided as a class that they do this in order to persuade us to buy their products.
The class discussed how important it was to accept and make friends with the things that we can’t change about ourselves. This creates a positive voice in our head where we feel happy and confident. We can change certain things about ourselves such as, eating healthily and exercising regularly which is key.
Every single person is special and beautiful in there own way and everyone has their own view of what that means. Beauty is in the eye of beholder!
Ask your child at home what they think is more important – beauty outside or beauty within!
Herd Farm
Hello all!
Year 4’s residential to Herd Farm was absolutely fantastic! For some of the children, it was their first night away from home but they all were incredibly mature and were having too much fun to even have a second to worry.
They all completed three different activities; the giant swing, the assault course and crate stacking. The most nerve-wracking activity was the giant swing but every single child overcame their fears and had a go on it. Some even went to the very top! The assault course ended up in some of the children getting soaked as the aim was to end up with the most water in their pot by the end! This was tricky… Finally, the crate stacking became a competition to see who could climb the highest. We managed to get to 11 crates high.
All of the staff were impressed at how enthusiastic and polite our class were. At each meal time, the children helped to set the tables. They sat and ate their amazing food and helped to tidy and clear up too!
I hope the children managed to get a good nights sleep on Friday night – I know we did!
