PE – Tuesday and Thursday

Spelling test – Friday

Library – Friday

Water bottles

These should be brought to school daily and they will be brought home every day for refreshing and cleaning.

Please contact the office if your child would like to have milk in Year 2.

Homework/Spellings

Whole school homework is set every Friday (along with new spellings). Homework and spellings can also be accessed from the website.

Reading

Daily reading, whether this is their e-book, a book from home or the library, is key to making progress in reading and to develop fluency.

Numbots

We continue to use Numbots in Year 2 (using the same login as Year 1) and certificates will be awarded every Tuesday for children who complete the different stages and make the most improvement over the week.

For spelling practice, reading and Numbots, little and often (10/15 minutes a day) is recommended.

Uniform

Please do check the uniform policy to ensure your child is wearing the correct items including for PE days. Earrings must be removed on PE days.

Finally, please do ask if there are any queries and keep checking back on class news to find out more about your child’s learning!

Thank you and goodbye!

On behalf of myself, Mrs Burgess and Mrs Charlesworth, we would all like to thank you for our gifts. It is extremely generous and kind of you.

I would also personally like to say thank you for all your kind words and messages this past week.

It has been a pleasure to teach your children for the past two years and watch them grow. It has also been a pleasure to get to know you all and I am so thankful to have worked with such friendly, supportive parents.

We have had a fabulous last week together and I will remember each and every one of them as I embark on my next chapter.

With love, Miss Needham x

Living and Learning: Safety Week

Posted on Friday 19 July 2024 by Mr Roundtree

Last week, Moortown Primary School were thinking all things ‘safety’.

Year 4 took part in a variety of workshops that included road safety, water safety, online safety and how to be safe around dogs!

Our favourite sessions was definitely when we took a trip to Roundhay High School to learn about how to be safe when trampolining and climbing.

Help at home by asking your child how they stayed safe on the trampoline and climbing wall!

We would like to say a big thank you for all our kind and generous gifts and cards that we’ve received this week and thank you for all of the support you’ve given this year.

It’s been a great year and it has been a pleasure to teach all the children and see how much they have progressed and matured over the year. We shall miss them!

We hope you all have a happy, healthy and safe summer holiday.

Summer 2: Week 7

Posted on Friday 19 July 2024 by Mr Roundtree

This week we have been talking lots about change. We have been looking at the way we change during our lifetime from being:

a baby

a toddler

a child

a teenager

an adult

someone that is elderly

The children were able to act out each stage and discuss the things that you can do during these times.

The children have been  talking and drawing about the things that they are looking forward to in year one.

We had a great Sports Day on Wednesday. The children showed real courage taking part in races infront of their peers and parents.

What a wonderful year reception class have had!

It has been a pleasure being able to share the last 9 weeks of their journey in reception. Even in that short time, the children have been a joy to teach  and  shown great progress.

They are now ready to start their new adventure in year one.

Thank you for all of your wonderful cards and gifts to reception staff.

Have a safe and fun summer.

The final week in Year One!

Posted on Friday 19 July 2024 by Mr McGriffiths

We have finished Year One with a very busy week!

On Monday, we wrote some instructions about how to make a hand puppet in our new Year 2 books! I was very impressed with the progress every child has made with their writing this year and I know Mrs Taylor and Mrs Lake will be too!

On Tuesday, we made a wrap by choosing all the fillings ourselves. We worked really hard and the delicious wrap was the reward!

On Wednesday, it was sports day! Everyone tried so hard and I was really impressed with the whole class’s attitude and effort.

On Thursday, we had a last chance to explore the shared area. Lots of the children have been inspired by the Rabbit and Bear books we have read and started making their own!

The final thing to say is that it has been an absolute pleasure to teach your children this year and you should be very proud of everything they’ve achieved. I know they will all continue to do an amazing job in Year 2!

Both Mrs Roth and I would also like to thank you hugely for the extremely generous gifts and kind words. We are very grateful.

Have a brilliant summer!

Design & Technology food: making wraps

Posted on Thursday 18 July 2024 by Mrs Taylor

This week, Year 2 have been using their food preparation skills to create their latest product, wraps.

This forms part of our Design and Technology food learning which involves following a recipe to create a product each term.

The recipe was our reading fluency text of the week so we had chance to read and understand the instructions before we made our wraps.

First, we got ready to cook by washing our hands, putting on our aprons and tying long hair back.

We used lots of different food preparation skills including draining, spreading, bridge hold (for chopping), claw grip (for chopping), grating, snipping, arranging toppings and rolling the wraps.

Finally, the children got to enjoy their wraps.

I LOVED my wrap because it was so tasty and healthy.

Mine was delicious!

The peppers and cucumber made it really crunchy.

Next time, I wouldn’t change anything.

I didn’t like the peppers but I tried them.

We always evaluate our product afterwards to see how it could be changed next time.

Well done to all the children who worked safely and sensibly with Mrs Maqbool and Mrs Roth.

Help at home: your child has taken this recipe home. Can they demonstrate some of their food preparation skills by making this again at home.

Staying Safe Week!

Posted on Monday 15 July 2024 by Miss Goswami

Last week was our themed week: Staying Safe. Year 5 were very busy learning how to stay safe in a range of different scenarios and situations.

On Monday, we kicked off the week with a road safety assembly. In this, the children recapped how to stay safe in each type of travel (car, bike/scooter, bus, train and walking).

  • A seatbelt must be worn every journey – whether that be a long or short drive.
  • You must not distract the driver.
  • If there is a seat available on a bus or train you must sit down.
  • Travel with an adult.
  • Green Cross Code: Think, Stop, Look and Listen.

At the end of the day, we had a water safety assembly. The children discussed the difference between canals and rivers and how to stay safe around them. You should always ‘Stay Away From the Edge’.

Help at home: Can you spot the dangers in the poster?

On Tuesday, we started off the day with an assembly on hate crime and the subsequent consequences. We learnt that in law they take into consideration 5 of the protected characteristics (religion, race, sexual orientation, gender and disability). Year 5 then had an assembly about online safety. In this, the children were able to revisit their knowledge about how to stay safe on games: reporting bad behaviour, not accepting someone you don’t know etc.

Next, Year 5 were visited by the one and only D:Side Dave. Dave came in to also talk to us about online safety. In this session, the children talked about the positive and negative effects of social media and discussed how to make responsible and safe choices on the internet. Take a look at how long each social media site has been around for.

Year 5 used their detective skills to work out if online profiles were real or fake.

To finish the lesson, we looked at the different age ratings on games.

Help at home: Can you identify any of the warning symbols?

To finish off the day, we had a session about promoting good health. The children learnt about how they can keep themselves healthy and happy.

On Wednesday, we started the day off with an assembly lead by RNLI. Did you know RNLI stands for Royal National Lifeboat Institute? Alan came in to speak to us about how to stay safe at sea and on the beach. He discussed the flags that you might see on a beach and what they mean. You must swim between the yellow and red flags to be seen by a lifeguard.

Later on in the morning we had a talk from the local firefighters. In this session, they told the Year 5 and 6s how to prevent fires at home: using reliable charging cables, making sure candles are extinguished and cleaning the hob after use. Firemen Sam and Dave told them how to help stop a fire spreading too – whether that be shutting all the doors at night or testing smoke alarms regularly.

On Thursday, the whole school had an assembly about how to stay safe around dogs. We then later had a session with Mrs Hill. We learnt that there are two things you must do before stroking a dog: ask permission from the owner and let the dog sniff and come to you first. We looked at a range of different scenarios between 6 different dogs and an imaginary character called Tom. The children needed to be dog detectives and decide if Tom could have been hurt and who was responsible for the consequences. Lots of children thought different dogs were responsible but Charlie was able to deduce that Tom was responsible!

To finish off the morning, we had a session with the British Military Martial Arts.

To finish off our Staying Safe week, we learnt about sun safety, railway safety and we had a session learning about first aid.

There are 5 ways to protect yourself from UV rays: SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SLIDE, SHADE.

  • slip on clothing to cover your skin
  • slop on suncream (20 minutes before the sun and every 2 hours to reapply)
  • slap on a hat to protect your face and scalp
  • slide on sunglasses to protect your eyes
  • seek shade whether that be natural or human-made

In our railway safety lesson, we watched a video and discussed how to be safe near railways and on train platforms.

In our first aid session, we tried to help our partners by tying bandages around their head injuries. Year 5 also got to try out CPR.

There are 4 steps to take before CPR:

  1. Try to wake up the casualty
  2. Shout for help
  3. Check for breathing
  4. Call and ambulance

Book amnesty

Posted on Monday 15 July 2024 by Mrs Taylor

As we enter the final week of Year 2, we would be grateful for the the return of any school reading or library books you may come across at home.

Please send these into school with your child over the next week.

We are also missing a few of the red Moortown PE t-shirts from the recent skipping festival if you could return them to school too.

Thank you for your support with this.
